Elder

Just after a bit of advice about sowing Elder seeds i've collected some of the berries, and the instructions on another site say to take the seeds out of the fruit, but it doesn't mention how deep to plant them can anyone offer any advice?

Thanks

John

Don't most gardening books say that seed is best buried the same depth as the seed size. So small seeds only need a light sprinkling over them whereas larger seeds need to have a thicker layer of soil (or whatever) above them.

I bring them on in a pot, just pressed below the surface or even from cuttings
like willow they seem to strike wherever they are pushed in

Re: Elder

I did around a couple of dozen seeds in a tray yesterday and will pick the strongest out to pot individually when they come up apparantly they are dead easy to germinate.

I look forward to getting the acorns Jez, i had some English Oak ones start to sprout last year just in the open, not even sowed one is now 18inches tall a year later

I love growing tree's, it's just finding somewhere to put them that i struggle with

A friend of mine gave a load of different tree seed as a gift one Christmas,I spent a whole year or more germinating them in and out of the freezer in some cases
the result was maybe thirty or so trees at different sizes over a period of time they got planted all over the place usually up the banks on laybys. this was all a long time ago and some are doing quiet well "we have watched them grow over the years as we have travelled up and down the local roads ............

I've been meaning to grow a tree for ages but havent got round to it
Might get some acorns tommorow, how long would i have to wait untill it sprouts ? as i know they are a slow growing tree
Or i could try Birch or any other trees with seeds on round here

Oak are about the easiest to grow, they will come up the next springtime they aren't mega slow growing, some of mine that are a year old are over 18in tall, some of the same age are 6in tall, suppose it just depends on how strong the individual seed is I've done a few Beech as well, they are lots slower growing than the oak, mine which are a yr old are now about 3-4in

Give it a go

Tell me about it!My brother decided to grow 200 Oaks & dumped them on me whilst he moved house. At some point i'd like them gone so i can make that used up space look attractive. But struggling to find homes for them which may sound daft living in a wood!
