| | | Flying Squirrel hi i have been keeping an eye on a squirrel flying onto the walnut tree in my neighbours garden that hangs over my fence, and i would like to grow one when they are ripe. i have noticed they are dissapering more and more each day,i have been blameing their children because they break the bows off very often,i do get cross but cant do anything about it only watch and grit my teeth, the other morning i was drinking my morning coffee looking out my patio doors thinking what a lovely day, when something caught my eye a squirrel running along my fence,he jumped into the walnut tree run up to the top and grabbed a nut shot along the fence and dissapered,i have seen him do this most mornings sometimes twice in a morning,i didnt realise they ate walnuts so it looks like i wont be growing a walnut tree afterall. |

| | | Re: squrirrel picked the nuts I don't think a Squirrel will consume all the nuts. Surely if this happened we would be a Walnut treeless Country? |

If all else fails I'll post you a few, and we can try growing them, never tried before but have been given hints by members of this site.
There's an enourmouse tree where we walk the dog, squirrels can't nick them all.
Max.

| | | Re: squrirrel picked the nuts Every year the squirrels strip our Walnut tree completely and there is nothing I can do about it. However, they bury a few in the garden and these germinate (usually in all the wrong places!) in the spring.

I did offer to send you some off our local tree, BUT it seems there aren't too many left that I can reach, will have a look tomorrow, see what I can find for you.
Max.

| | | Re: squrirrel picked the nuts As yet, haven't had the usual problem of squirrels eating the nuts and damaging the hazels but if, when, they appear shall resort to netting. Not easy on a walnut tree - perhaps you could net one branch? |

| | | Re: squrirrel picked the nuts Hi People,
Here we go gathering nuts in...., well, I looked at the tree this AM and it's in the same condition as yours naturelover , no nuts at all on the tree, but went scratching through the fallen leaves under it and came up with these, after seeing them you may change your mind about having them, they could be full grown by the time you get them as well, forgot about the postal strike.
Most I found were split in half or had little teeth marks.
IF you still want them,PM me your address.
Max.

| | | Re: squirrel picked the nuts Hi,
Can't say I blame you, but I think it's only the outer husk that looks yuk, the nuts themselves are all in one piece, we'll stick them in a pot and see what happens, if I can remember by then I'll let you know.
Max.
Naturelover, this was on my earlier post about walnuts, just found it again.
Hi Max,
Them Americans don't know what they're on about.
1. Collect the ripe walnuts (fallen ones preferably)
2. Stick them in the back of your fridge for about 6 weeks.
3. Remove outer skin but DO NOT crack the shell.
4. Plant whole nuts in a flower pot of equal parts soil and sand/grit. Covered by about 1
inch of soil/sand.
5. Keep soil moist - leave outdoors is good enough so long as it rains.
I have grown several walnut trees like this and they have all germinated the year after falling off the tree.
Good luck,
Adam
