Could you be thinking of Black Horehound, Ballota nigra, sometimes referred to as Stinking Roger (wonder who he was?)?

Marsh Woundwort only has a slight smell - it is Hedge Woundwort that has a srrong, foul smell

This is hedge Woundwort if you'd like a sniff! It's still in flower around here.

Always worth checking this plant for the small, but attractive, shieldbug Eysacoris fabricii which feeds on this plant + sometimes other related labiates; have found it on Lamium album too.
