What time of year do you prune apple trees? and how much do you take off?
Does anyone prune their own apple trees?

Winter for fruit: summer for shape.
The RHS web page also has a good guide, unfortunately for winter pruning you need to know whether your variety is a tip or spur fruiter!!!

| | | Re: Aple tree Im thinking i might have to get someone in to do it..the trunk is about two and a half foot tall and the branches go to nearly 30 feet and maybe about 25~30 foot wide. Its so top heavy!!! 
We only moved here in march and it was to late to prune it then.

The RHS will be your best bet.
