What time of year do you prune apple trees? and how much do you take off?
Does anyone prune their own apple trees?

I planted mine in October november,and pruned them in December
Easiest way to prune? google; pruning apple trees for a photo guide

The old adage:
Winter for fruit: summer for shape.
The RHS web page also has a good guide, unfortunately for winter pruning you need to know whether your variety is a tip or spur fruiter!!!

Im thinking i might have to get someone in to do it..the trunk is about two and a half foot tall and the branches go to nearly 30 feet and maybe about 25~30 foot wide. Its so top heavy!!! 
We only moved here in march and it was to late to prune it then.

It depends what you're pruning them for: growth or fruit.
The RHS will be your best bet.
