| | | Chastity Hi All,
My mother-in-law gave me what she called a Chastity Bush. Anyone come across this name before, if so what is it please. I Googled the name and all it came up with was George Bush and chastity in american teenagers At the moment it is a small shrub about 18' tall. The leaves are palmate, smooth, hairless and look like untoothed Cannabis leaves. I' don't think it is an Acer, but I'm not too hot on my ornamentals.
Cheers,
Adam |

| | | Re: Chastity Hi Adam - Vitex agnus-castus, also known as Chaste berry, Monks Spice, Chastity Bush.... Flowers are a symbol of purity in southern Europe, and the ancient Greeks reckoned it guaranteed purity in left-behind wives when the warriors headed off to war!

| | | Re: Chastity Found this but it is american , I don't know if you can find out the zone temps Quote:
As to cold tolerance, the plant is best in USDA Hardiness Zones 6 and south. In Zone 6, there will be occasional heavy winter damage which, of course, is not a problem with annual cut-back treatment. The plant can perform admirably in Zone 5 if cut back in late fall and mulched heavily for the winter. While latifolia certainly seems more vigorous than the species as listed in most references, I'm not so sure about the supposed increased cold tolerance. As for heat tolerance, chaste tree does not only survive the heat of Zones 7 and 8, it actually seems to embrace it. Water amply, fertilize modestly and you simply can't miss. | Thursday's Plant -- Vitex agenus-castus |

| | | Re: Chastity The RHS Gardeners' Encyclopedia of Plants & Flowers says:
"VITEX (Verbenaceae) Genus of evergreen or deciduous trees and shrubs grown for their flowers. Cultivated species are frost hardy, but in cold areas grow against a south- or west-facing wall. Needs full sun and well-drained soil."
