Thanks |

| | | Re: Unidentified Marshside Plant2 It is Stachys sylvatica (Hedge Woundwort) - definitely not Stachys palustris (Marsh Woundwort) which has pale flowers, slightly larger and longer leaves. The other way of testing for woundworts is to take a leaf, crush and sniff - they all smell fairly disgusting but S. sylvatica is the most bleeeuargh. Stachys palustris |

| | | Re: Unidentified Marshside Plant2 I'd go along with Paul on this one. I have Marsh Woundwort growing in my garden and along the Thames near me. It is every bit as dark as the plant in the picture. Also Marsh leaves are obviously pointed as in this picture whereas Hedge leaves tend to be more rounded. Assuming this pic was taken in a wild place, I personally haven't seen Hedge Woundwort growing alongside Yellow Loosestrife.
Cheers,

Marsh Woundwort has a very different leaf shape |

| | | Re: Unidentified Marshside Plant2 Definitely Hedge Woundwort. The plant in the photo clearly has long petioles, whereas Marsh Woundwort is virtually sessile, though hybrids between the 2 species are not uncommon where the parents meet + the petiole length tends to be intermediate + in my experience have similar flower colour to Hedge Woundwort.
Personally I've never seen Marsh Woundwort with such dark flowers; usually they are more showy + pinkish. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
