| | | Is this a Speedwell? Can anyone identify this flower found in valley alongside river at Solva, Pembrokeshire, today. I thought it was a Speedwell but it doesn't match anything in my field guide. Help would be appreciated please. |

Crush the leaves and you get a strong smell, not quite sure how to describe it - I have heard a range of descriptions but to mme it is obviously minty.

Not an ivy at all of course, but even the Latin name reflecs the ivy association so I guess the leaves do look a bit like ivy. This plant really does repay a closer look and your lovely photograph does it proud - almost like tiny orchids. Apparently it was the chief source of bitter for flavouring beer before hops were used. |
