Can anyone identify this flower found in valley alongside river at Solva, Pembrokeshire, today. I thought it was a Speedwell but it doesn't match anything in my field guide. Help would be appreciated please.  |

Crush the leaves and you get a strong smell, not quite sure how to describe it - I have heard a range of descriptions but to mme it is obviously minty.

Yes it is ground ivy (Glechoma hederacea). Not an ivy at all of course, but even the Latin name reflecs the ivy association so I guess the leaves do look a bit like ivy. This plant really does repay a closer look and your lovely photograph does it proud - almost like tiny orchids. Apparently it was the chief source of bitter for flavouring beer before hops were used. |
