| | | Knotweed/hemlock/giant hogweed Ok the land next to ours is national trust land but it skirts my drive and garden. There is a small woodland shaw with woodland edge scrub next to us and something is popping up all over at speed.
This week my decisions on what it is using books, rose, mabeys flora etc has switched from giant hogweed to hemlock to jap knotweed?
Is it me or is the "easily identified by " characteristic the same for all 3? purple speckled or spotted hollow stems?
My plants have this so at first and because of the height of last years dead stems and heads i thought it was giant hog....then someone said as its not near water its unlikely so i switched to hemlock...but neither of these have the right shaped leaves for my plant? then i accidentally fell onto the jap kntoweed page with the right shaped leaves and this also has the red speckled stems and matches the rhubard colouring and almost asparagus like new young shoots?
Part of me is hoping of the 3 it is knotweed as at least its not harmul to me or kids etc....but its growing so fast ....
are they obliged ( NT) to get rid or will they say ( its on our side of the fence nothing for you to worry about?)
Ill get pics on here asap...but looking at the Gallery it is jap knotweed im sure?.
Is it also true parts of this cane be eaten?

Dan | as they are so close dan why dont you volunteer to help them control it ? - if you are lucky they might pay for you to do the pA1 -PA6 tickets - assuming you dont get that through your college course

| | | Re: Knotweed/hemlock/giant hogweed by the way if it is JK the best way to kill it is to inject each stem with glyphosate or triclopur - very labour intensive, spraying doesnt work too well as it kills the plant but not the root system
just be careful not to inject yourself - my halfwit ex colleague adam did that down in cornwall and his leg swelled up like a balloon , not the best

although i can't suggest any other ways of controlling it, direct injection is the best method, in relation to the other query...is it edible....yes, parts of it are indeed edible. follow the link below to find out which bits and how to cook it!
