| | | Re: Favourite wildlife sites My only reservation about Rutland Water is that, at least when we lived nearby, as a walker you constantly had to sidestep cyclists - particularly annoying too if they approach from behind. I felt there should be one path for walkers and another for cyclists.
Canoeists too were discouraged from using the reservoir - I believe they disturbed the anglers. But it was such a pity as anything which encourages young folk to get out into this type of environment is to be applauded.
Perhaps things have changed there in the last few years.
Finally, I know some avid bird watchers preferred nearby Eyebrook. |

1 - It's possible to watch a good 80% of the reservoir from the road, a very large advantage for those birders with mobility problems.
2 - The Ospreys from Rutland come to fish there several times a day giving stunningly close views.
3 - For those birders interested in Gulls it has a huge gull roost which frequently contains, Meds, Icelands, Glaucous etc.....
4 - The feeding station on the western shore can be also watched from the road & has a good colony of Tree sparrows.
5 - The reservoir is set in a fantastic valley so its usually fairly sheltered.
In short if you venture anywhere near Rutland Water then Eyebrook is certainly worth a visit, its just a pity that it seems to exist in the shadow of its larger neighbour. |

With Rutland water less than 10 miles away the whole area makes for a great days birding at any time of year. |
