| | | Elmley Marshes There have been problems with algae in the wader scrapes at Elmley so they are being drained and the view from Wellmarsh hide currently looks like this...
There are a couple of puddles in front of Counterwall hide but it's pretty similar.
Once the algae has been killed, the scrapes will be re-flooded but, for the time being, there will be little in the way of wildfowl and waders to be seen from these hides. As it's a walk of a mile and a quarter from the car park and the same back again, I just thought I'd let people know what to expect.
I'll report back here when they are re-flooded unless one of the more regular visitors beats me to it.

| | | Re: Elmley Marshes This reminds me of when we went. There was another hide that was damaged (in adverse weather I think). I don't know if it has been fixed (can't remember the name of the hide). It was such a shame because it was the first one that looked over that wall, and you aren't supposed to look over there, and it's a long walk to find out that because you didn't know which hide was which, you would be disappointed.

| | | Re: Elmley Marshes Have to say that I've always found Elmley a bit of a long grind for little reward, particularly in winter when you will be fighting against the wind in one direction or other. Thankfully the best raptor watching seems to be along the driive or around the farm. I find that for better wader watching Shell Ness is far better and you are much closer to the birds. The Swale NNR is also great for wildfowl and you get some seawatching to boot. For raptors, Harty Ferry is the place on Sheppey.
Cheers,
