| | | Rutland Water If you know Rutland Water then you don't need to read any further.
If you don't then, if you are within in easy travelling distance, can I encourage you to go?
We were there last Friday and Saturday and the good weather probably helped and yes we did go to the Lyndon Reserve to see the ospreys (some really helpful folks in the hide) and popped into a couple of other hides for a very short time(we had a time limit on the hire bikes so we could not stay long), so it was not a hardcore birding weekend. However, our list was
Greenfinch
Goldfinch
Reed Bunting
Dunnock
Yellowhammer
Chaffinch
Siskin
Blackbird
Starling
Mallard
Coot
Great Crested Grebe
Little Grebe
Mute Swan
Canada Goose
Greylag Goose
Egyptian Goose
Ringed Plover
Curlew
Sand Martin
Black Headed Gull
Tufted Duck
Wigeon
Teal
Pheasant
Osprey
Buzzard
Kite
Magpie
Jackdaw
Carrion Crow
Chiffchaff (heard)
Willow W (heard)
that combined with great views, a good cycle route around the lake, some good friends and wine made a great weekend.

| | | Re: Rutland Water You could see the ospreys with binoculars - just. I don't know how often the folks at the Lyndon reserve do this but when we visited they had two scopes set up that anyone could use.

| | | Re: Rutland Water I used to visit Rutland a lot up until a few years ago, but only ever found the ospreys to be distant. Maybe I was just unlucky. Nevertheless, it is a fantastic place and from there you can strike out to some other good places, especially ones with good flowers and butterflies. Barnack Hills and Holes isn't too far away as I recall and oodles of pasque flowers are found there.

| | | Re: Rutland Water i went to the lyndon reserve quite briefly with uni last year and saw the ospreys. I'm planning to have a weekend there in the next few weeks so i can cycle round the lake, and then spend the next day birding. can't wait!
