| | | Public Art I'm curiuos as to what WAB members thoughts are on Public Art in the Countryside and other areas in general.
I've noticed there is alot more of this going on recently in my area. Most of what i see will occasionally tie in with its surroundings and looks good. But there can be some monstrosities, if you check out this link of one near me you will see what i mean. WalesOnline - CardiffOnline - Cardiff news - Statue too phallic for villagers

Regards Chris.. | I don't think I would want this particular statue in my village.... too big for a start. But I don't think it is "too phallic"..... Some people will see phallic symbols everywhere.

| | | Re: Public Art I'm all for 'art' that blends in and compliments it's surroundings. We have a few lovely wood carvings in our area, which are nice to see while out and about.
Some years ago in Tideswell Dale, an owl was carved from a large tree stump and also a sheep. The latter is no more, after the poor thing fell apart bit by bit....and the owl now has a split right down the middle!
Stone sculptures etc can be rather nice too, especially if produced from stone local to the area.

| | | Re: Public Art All art is very subjective. Re that Cardiff example, what one person sees as phallic another one doesn't - I instantly see that one as inspired by a stylised Hopi Kachina. It's the same with new architecture - Some is liked, but more is hated. And some people don't like anything to change in their environment or locality.
You're never gonna please all of the people all of the time. No point getting too upset over such things.

| | | Re: Public Art I rather like this sculpture, and I don't see it as phallic. I love public contemporary art (I’m a regular visitor to Yorkshire Sculpture Park). I think the sheer scale of this piece gives it its allurement, along with its symbolism of ‘watching over the children’. If the area is as run-down as portrayed in Wales on Line, then this new attraction will hopefully serve to put Pengam on the map, bringing in some tourism, which will hopefully benefit the local community. Just my thoughts. |

| | | Re: Public Art When I visited The Eden Project a few years ago they had a huge sculpture of a human form 'robot' constructed entirely of things such as TV sets and scrap metal household objects. It was marvellous. I don't know if it's still there.
