| | | Re: Shetland Trip Advice Ramna Stacks. Northernmost point of Shetland Island. Birds? Puffins, gannets, gulls, . . .If you don't visit Ramna you are MAD. The 500ft drop may be a bit scarey, but it's worth it. Trust me, get up to the Stacks. I'm not especially into birds but the Stacks are AWESOME.

| | | Re: Shetland Trip Advice Thanks again for all the brilliant advice!
Thanks for that information John! We are definately going to Hermaness and Sumburgh Head, and doing the boat trip around noss. We are staying at Betty Mouats for a few days so will have time to visit the Pool of Virkie and Grutness, thanks for informing us.
@STYRBJORN - That does sound very interesting. Can you remember where you got the ferry from to the stacks?
We will be staying at youth hostels in the south (Betty Mouats) and on Unst (Gardiesfauld). Is there anywhere near these places that are worth visiting in the evening, pubs ect.
Thanks. |

Thanks. | I was staying with an old school friend in Lerwick, and we went overland, so I can't help. Sorry 'bout that.
A word of warning. Don't ever call a Shetlander a Scot. They consider themselves Vikings. The islands were Norwegian until they were given to a king of Scotland as a dowry. Naturally I got on well with them!

| | | Re: Shetland Trip Advice There is a wonderful wildlife walk in the north of mainland near Eshaness.
Go along the road to Eshaness and beside a large bay a couple of miles before Eshaness there is a track that leads to Gluss water. Continue over the moors to a series of small lochs. The moors are wonderful - full of golden Plover and bonxies and many other species but some of the lochs are simply stuffed with birds.
Eshaness is also noted for the sea tunnel that comes out behind Loch Houlland - several hundred yards from the sea the waves break on a little beach in a large hollow.
There are a lot of otters there too. I've seen them just to the south of Mavis Grind.

Ric | I have searched the internet for Ramna Stacks and it doen't appear to be able to get to them, I shall ask the tourist information centre. Quote:

I'll bear that in mind! I had read that in the guidebook, and I think I'm right in saying that Lerwick is in fact closer to the Norweigan Mainland than it is to the Scottish mainland.
@Endrick - Thanks for that information, I've found it on the map. I'm not sure whether we will be able to get to Eshaness but I'll bear it in mind if we have a change of plan. I'm confident that many of the lochs will have lots of bird life around and we should be able to venture out closer to the hostels. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
