| | | Minsmere Had a really great ,morning at Minsmere today. The sun shone and went with son for a change.
Hoped their might be adders about on Dunwich Heath early on in the sun but after walking and searching for 45mins no luck apart from one Slow Worm so as we had said about Minsmere we hurried on. Walking along the path from Bittern Hide to Island Mere in the slim hope of a Bittern I was following so Long Tailed tits in the bushes when son points out where he had seen a snake move from a second before. Now son is not really into birds and wildlife so couldnt tell what it was but after looking around for a few mins we moved away quietly in the hope it came back to bask. Sure enough it or rather they did, A pair of Adders one with cloudy eyes probably about to shed. They seemed quite "friendly" or rather one did and settled down in the sun, the other kept coming and going. They allowed us to get right in with a 70mm lens in close up as well as the 300mm.
What happened next was a bit unusual as son saw another snake coming very close and goes dont think it is an adder so I turned quickly to see a grass snake less than a meter from us heading ours and the adders way but it suddenly saw me and turned quickly before i could get any form of focus on him. Never seen one move so quickly and never seen one before that close to an adder.
Then told that a Bittern was showing well in Island Mere but of course by the time we got there the hide was full and Bittern was now into the edge of the reeds but some very interesting shots were had.
Not the best pictures but I like them. Son had never seen a bittern before, it never came out again while we were there but he still saw it in the reeds next to the hide.
Lastly a first sighting of the spoonbill but no photos as it was too far away. A great day in the sun, Pity had to be back early but then that what happens

| | | Re: Minsmere Minsmere is one of my favourite places! Sounds like you had a great time - I've seen adders and grasssnakes in Suffolk but don't recall seeing them at Minsmere. And I've certainly never seen the two species so close as that! It must have been quite amazing.
Great photos too, thanks for sharing! | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
