| | | Stonehenge Rebuilt I've been looking for an early Stonehenge programme that I found in a little second hand book shop at Glastonbury around 15 years ago, and I can't find it anywhere.
The Map of Stonehenge in my programme, the stones are arranged very differently to how they stand today. I know there is no mention of any rebuilding work in this early programme ( 1946 ) maybe.
Has anyone got a more up to date programme of Stonehenge, that might now have this added information on the rebuilding stages.
I'll go and have another look for that programme. |

| | | Re: Stonehenge Rebuilt I have 'The Stonehenge People' by Rodney Castleden (1998) and that talks about 3 major stages in the formation of the Henge. Starting with an earthwork, then the introducing the various stones from about 3000 bc , the bluestones being brought to the site about 2250BC. http://www.megalithia.com/stonehenge/history.html
THis has an animation of the possible contstruction.

| | | Re: Stonehenge Rebuilt New Scientist Jan 2001 says... English Heritage says it is now considering covering the Stonehenge alteration programme in detail in the next edition of its official guidebook to the site. A decision not to include the work in official guides was taken in the 1960s, says Dave Batchelor, English Heritage's senior archaeologist.
The first restoration project took place in 1901. A leaning stone was straightened and set in concrete, to prevent it falling.
More drastic renovations were carried out in the 1920s. Under the direction of Colonel William Hawley, a member of the Stonehenge Society, six stones were moved and re-erected.
Cranes were used to reposition three more stones in 1958. One giant fallen lintel, or cross stone, was replaced. Then in 1964, four stones were repositioned to prevent them falling.
So what you want might be in the current guidebook???

| | | Re: Stonehenge Rebuilt When we were there last December there was a new guidebook out which I think may have had something like that in it - but I sent it to a pal so can't check for you.
It's available through English Heritage anyway - Guidebook: Stonehenge - English Heritage Online Shop
