| | Where in Whitby... I have planned a short holiday near Whitby, North Yorkshire and wondered if anyone can recommend places to walk and to see wildlife, reserves etc.,

| | | Re: Where in Whitby... If you go to the Tourist info place and get the leaflet called "The Cinder track" you will get guide to the old Railway line that used to run from Whitby to Scarborough. It is now a bridleway form one to the other, easy walking or cycling and some great views. It also gives access to loads of other places that come close to it, a good OS map and you should be away. This time of the year, a good deal of wildlife is sort of sleeping. Don't miss Pickering, especially the amazing wall paintings in the church.

The best map for the area is the OS North York Moors eastern area explorer EX 027.
Places worth a visit include; Robin Hoods Bay (check tide table for low tides)Great for rock pools also a walk along cliff top on disused railway track.
Goathland (where they film Heartbeat) Take public footpath down the side of the Malyum Spout Hotel turn left when you reach the stream to veiw the waterfall, then turn back along the stream and follow track to the village.
The North York Moors steam trains run through Goath land and there are a few stops where you can get off and do a circular walk.
The North Yorkshire Moors National Park Visitor Centre near Danby is worth a visit, there is also a bird hide and feeding station in Crow Wood close by the Centre.

| | | Re: Where in Whitby... There is a nice cliff edge walk (about 30mins) over the hill with the abbey which leads to a beach with lots of fossils. Rock pools too! I think the descent to the beach was closed last time but take care and it isn't too hazardous
I would also highly recommend the sealife centre in Scarborough if you like fish and want to help them with their seal rescue program IMO it is a better experience than my local blue planet near Chester which is a much bigger aquarium! |

Dave | Thanks davecatt that's some good information I will look forward to the bird hide in Crow Wood. Thanks for letting me know where they filmed Heartbeat - I thought is was Whitby itself! Quote:

ollyk, I will take a look at the cliff edge walk but as it will be mid-winter it may be too slippy - with my history, I can trip over my shadow!! .

Sorry this post crossed with one I posted and I missed it
The Cinder Track, is just what I was looking for, I will certainly take a walk along there, not all the way probably but as much as I can. I will also see Pickering and the wall paintings in the church.
Thank you so much for this information. I now have places to go and things to look forward to
