Lovely though. |

T | I totally agree, Ebbor also has more wildlife that Cheddar & as you say the views are great. Although not a gorge, Deer Leap, just up the road from Ebbor has even better views of the Levels & the Bristol Channel.
The only thing to marr the view is Hinckley Point Nuclear Power Station on the coast.

| | | Re: Gorges in the UK Yes, most of the limestone dales have some pretty spectacular scenery but most of their walls are less perpendicular: the limestone rounds off or collapses into scree. My favourite sheer-sided (on one side only so not really a gorge!) is at Millers Dale, just east of the station. Partly ancient hazel coppice, partly old quarry with lots of orchids &c) and partly sheer cliff face.
Up here, on the millstone grit measures, you get some seriously precipitous 'edges' but these are all one sided and don't have half as much natural interest as the limestone. Quote: |

| | | Re: Gorges in the UK How about the Black Rock Gorge near Evanton here in the highlands. It's only about 10ft wide but very deep. there is a small footbridge so you can look down into the scary depths. The river Glass runs through it. |

| | | Re: Gorges in the UK Lydford Gorge, on the northwestern edge of Dartmoor in Devon
the first half is in woods, with little streams and babbling brooks (?) trickling down the sides, very picturesque, and a waterfall - 'White Lady' I think it was called
2nd half is a 1-2ft wide path along the gorge that hugs a rock face, with drops up to 30ft ish with only a handrail on the rock face side, so it can be a bit unnerving, and very slippery in places, I took the advice to wear 'proper' hiking boots and was slipping all over the shop on the wet rocky steps, whilst the missus had trainers on and had no problem
at the end there is a very dark bit called the 'Devils Cauldron' - very dark and not for the faint hearted as you walk over on a creaky rusty old iron platform with a bit of a drop below you
oh and half way there is a little shop to have cream teas or whatever takes your fancy |

| | | Re: Gorges in the UK Hello Stuart
Second largest gorge in Britain after Cheddar is the Winnets Pass (near Speedwell Cavern, Castleton, Peak District National Park. It's really spectacualr though it does get very busy so best early or late in the day IMHO.
