| | | RSPB Haweswater,Shap,Cumbria. Here are a few images from a very wet day recently spent at the above reserve.
We would never have found it at all without the sat nav and even with it we ended up down roads that were "closed" and "private" but found it after driving through some stunning scenery mostly open moorland.
The path up to the Golden Eagle viewing platform starts at the car park through the little gate (pic 1) and climbs up for over a mile......unfortunately we were driven back by the heavy rain and descending cloud before we reached the viewing area.....not that there was anything to view by then! lol!
A great day out tho and in good weather a place definitely worth a re-visit! |

| | | Re: RSPB Haweswater,Shap,Cumbria. Your photos Ruth bring back many memories: During the late 80's/early 90's we would spend many of our spare days at Haweswater - back to the days when the nearby golden eagles were at their best.
Haweswater itself has a great history - Beneath the reservoir lies the remains of the village of Mardale, which was flooded in the 30's when the reservoir was created. In times of severe drought the remains of the old village are exposed. These photos below (old slides from 1990) were taken from the top of the Riggindale ridge, and show Haweswater in normal conditions, and another in drought - where you can pick out old village road and the remains of Mardale (and the path that takes you around the lake towards wooded headland of The Rigg towards the RSPB's golden eagle hide just around the bend and out of sight.)
I'll try and dig out some photos of the village later - quite fascinating.
As you rightly say - lovely part of the Lake District.

| | | Re: RSPB Haweswater,Shap,Cumbria. The head of Haweswater is a dear place. The great AW described it as the finest valley head in Lakeland, even better than Wastwater and I agree with him. Saw my first 'goldie' there too. In the drowned hamlet of Mardale Green, there was a fine ale-house called The Dun Bull I believe. Oh how I'd like to have supped a pint there.
Regards, Chris

Ken | Oooh, I hope so Ken. Perhaps there is an old sepia photo somewhere of me in a previous form, raising a tankard of the 'golden grain' to someone with a box camera.
