snails in the western isles
On a trip to the western isles in summer last year a friend noticed that all the fence post tops were covered in snails. THis was in the isle of Harris. Does anyone have any explaination for this- there are almost no trees there, is this anything to do with it?

Perhaps to graze on lichen or algae that might be growing there?

You may wish to look at this thread.

From your description, it sounds as if they were in summer hibernation or aestivation.


Tree hugging snails, why?

wow, thats an amazing photo on the other site. Aestivation would make sense as it was during a period of hot dry weather.
