| | Map Recommendations Please Could anyone suggest a good, detailed, on-line map? for mainland Britain. (Preferably something that isn't a pay-site, and doesn't require registration, etc. etc.). I'm looking for something that can be freely accessed, to give an idea of what a given site will be like.
I regularly use Ordnance Survey "Get A Map", which provides the level of terrain detail I'm looking for, along with identifying the necessary local place names etc. etc.
The problem with Get-A-Map though, is the area that can be viewed (when zoomed in for maximum detail), is extremely small, and necessitates constantly having to pan around to try to find things.
Has anyone found anything better? (Something on the lines of Google mapping, but with Ordnance Survey or similar type detail would be ideal) - I've looked at various mapping sites, but haven't found anything as yet.
Any help appreciated.
Regards

Mike. | Try MultiMap - the link below should be an OS map of Marshside near Southport: Maps of the world, street map search - powered by Multimap
Click on the arrow to the left of the map and it should make it virtually full screen.
Try the other views (Map, Aerial and Bird's Eye), the Bird's Eye view doesn't work everywhere in the UK, but is amazing where it does work!
Cheers

| | | Re: Map Recommendations Please Thanks Jonathan,
Last time I tried Multimap it didn't have the option for viewing in Ordnance Survey format. But since it now obviously does, it's exactly what I've been looking for. (Without your prompt, I may well not have gone back to the Multimap site for some considerable time).
Much appreciated

As I work within the Property industry, mapping is very important for my job and without a doubt the most useful Web mapping service is Promap. If you google Promap you will find it very easily and it there is a free registration. We use the site for preparing Planning applications, and scaling sites etc, the site uses Ordnance Survey as its source so is reliable. If you click onto products you will see a range of scaled maps which are mostly free to view. However to print a map there is a charge and the finest detailed maps also have a small charge to view. The value of Promap to you will depend on the level of detail you want, I can testify to its quality and accuracy and I often use the site to quote a specific map point when reporting wildlife sightings.

Congratulations on your ton up. I have just checked Promap and you are right I have not seen the message before but they are doing maintenance on site. I suspect it will be up and running by morning and they have timed the work for a weekend. Within the Property world Promap is pretty universal and the basis for a lots of planning enquiries etc.

I'll have another look during the weekend and hopefully it will be back up and running. I'm just not sure about the implications of registering etc. (don't want to be pestered by adverts or that sort of thing) - but I'll certainly give it a trial.

| | | Re: Map Recommendations Please maybe its my age, but it feels like technology is reaching a tipping point of becoming invaluable when you can take a phone with you that can access something like multimap and get full detailed mapping of most parts of the uk.
I cant imagine how I would have reacted to a little box that i could use as a phone, access to t'internet, and music, camera and (effectively) an OS map that knew where I was!
there's nothing quite like having a map physically in your hand but the potential of these mapping sites, including Anquet, google earth coupled with Arkive and of course WAB are incredible....
technology eh? not all bad!

I had a good look at Promap this morning (Watched all the demo videos). As you say, it offers a very well specced series of mapping options. Quite honestly, I think the services provided, are far in excess of what I actually need (certainly at this point in time), and I'm quite satisfied with Multimap's full screen option of viewing Ordnance Survey maps. However, I've tagged Promap as one of my favourites, as it may well need to come into play at a later date.
