You can do the UK anytime, you live here, and as you say you can save UK trips for university vacation times as they are long enough to do a great UK-based trip.
Mind you, having said that, I am off to Australia and Asia in May for three months (booked and paid for) but have now developed a hankering after the Scottish Highlands and Islands!
So I'll have to do them next year instead.

Jim | Wasn't that all the rage in the 60's?

It is not unusual to find that Uni courses have field trips to places like S.America, I always wanted to go Polar. |

A close friend of mine helps run this place - you can volunteer for quite long periods and you will see and help great wildlife |

| | | Re: Gap year: Where can i go? There are companies like Frontier, my daughter went to Vietnam a few years back with them.
She got a BTEC in Tropical Habitat Conservation from her stay. They searched for new species on the islands in the bay of tonkin and in the limestone crags.
However, if other trips are similar, it was not for the faint hearted (or the worrying parent). It was quite tough. Especially if the participants have done no outside/survival living before.
Frontier also ran into some trouble this year for putting in danger some of its participants who got shot at by African rebels. Although Frontier say they have tightened up where they go since.
That said, it is an adventurous and exciting thing to do and I am sure you will enjoy your trip

Jim | yes I would recommend Mordor, lovely hot lava pools and a giant eye for sightseeing. Watch out for hobbits though - they have nits on their feet.
