| | | Romney Marsh and its environs. Hello there
I am spending a few days around Rye and Romney marsh next week and was wondering if anybody out there knows of some good places for wildlife and landscape (birds/wildflowers etc).
I have heard a little about Dungress Bird Ob and Ham Street woods, so somewhere out of the way maybe nice(Local Nature Reserves that sort of thing). Also i have heard that there are some inland cliffs around the area, remnants of the former shoreline, where would be the best place to see them?
Thanks in advance.

| | | Re: Romney Marsh and its environs. Thanks UB4, i tried that link and apart from Romney Marsh visitor centre, the majority of sites seem to be in North Kent. So maybe visitor centre will have some info.

| | | Re: Romney Marsh and its environs. There are the Dungeness gravel pits which are a favourite place for waterbirds. All across the marsh are dykes which are good for walking. Look for the Woolpack Inn near Brookland just off the A259. As you drive past it heading towards Folkestone the road bends steeply left then right, turn off to the left on the right hand bend, there is a quiet country lane, and if you are interested there is a tiny church in the middle of the fields there St Thomas a Becket which you can look around.
The inland cliffs can be accessed from West Hythe/Port Lympne (pronounced lim). Then at Saltwood there is Brock hill country park, which is a lake surrounded by woodland with a visitor centre. |

I'll be getting my O/S Map out to try and find St Thomas a Becket church( I have a thing for old parish churches amongst over things) sounds like a good place to walk.
The reason i want to see the inland cliffs is because i used to live on the Greensand in Surrey and wanted to see the place where the Greensand is named for.

Rye Harbour Nature Reserve would be well worth a visit, I think. I've yet to visit it, but my brother lives in the area and he says it's great...
Here's a link for some info: http://www.wildrye.info/
Hope that helps!
