| | | Re: Minsmere tips Hello again 'mrs fish',
Unfortunately it seems there are people who are prepared to come to Suffolk just to take our Antlions back home with them, either as a novelty or to breed in captivity or to just release them and say to the world 'I've found them here too' when in reality they will just die because the habitat is completely different to the dry Sandlings Coast.
A flying adult was found on the Suffolk coast about 100 years ago and the finder told other naturalists to keep an eye open for the pits which would prove the adult was native and not blown over from the continent, but despite searching no pits were ever found (I find them very easy to spot) so it was thought to be a migrant.
Perhaps it was, because many naturalists have been attracted to the Suffolk coast for years and years and there has been no record of any pits until I found them on Dunwich Heath in 86' and later, at Thorpeness in 92'
So by the time Minsmere had found them in 94' they had already spread at least 6 miles further down the coast !!
