| | | Heading down to Skomer I'm planning on a trip to Skomer Island at the end of June.
Does any one have any tips on the best places to photograph the puffins? Or general tips on what to look out for, as it my first time on the island?

I have just returned from a long weekend in Wales which included my first trip to Skomer .... report and photos to follow in a few days .... I have a large numer of Puffin photos to sort through!
I saw Puffins at The Wick in the south of the Island and at the Garland Stone in the north of the island. You get VERY close up views (the warden says don't pick one up!) and a 300mm lens maximum should be all you need. You will also see plenty of Puffins on the sea as you approach Skomer.
These links I found to be very informative before I visited .... BBC - Hands on Nature - Skomer Island BBC - South West Wales Nature Walks - Skomer Island Walk BBC - South West Wales Nature Walks - Skomer Island Walk - Part 2 BBC - South West Wales Nature Walks - Skomer Island Walk - Part 3
In addition, when you land on the island, the warden will tell you the best places to see the various wildlife. You can also buy a leaflet guide and map.
Enjoy! .... I certainly did even if I did come back with sunburn and aching limbs from the walk.

| | | Re: Heading down to Skomer Didn't make it to skomer. Was going down to use the camera primarily, as wildlife photography is one of my hobbies. Guess what camera packed in, still waiting to get new one, as no funds Well have to schedule visit for next year.

| | Re: Heading down to Skomer Ahhh Pembroke !
I have been there many times and wished to get to Skomer without luck all my pals who go with me walking, painting and birding dont like boats!
I have seen so many gannets flying and diving off Maloes and St. Davids further North. Dolphin pods, Perigrines and Choughs. Lovely!!!!!!!!.
Very envious of anyone who gets out to Skomer. I have always wanted to see the Puffins but never have over the last ten years of visitting. I intend to try next year EVEN IF I HAVE TO GO ALONE !!
