| | Disappearing places Hi,
Has anyone noticed that place names are being eaten up, a hill out of Reading was called, Shepherds House Hill, it's now called Shepherds Hill, wouldn't fit on the bus tickets, Berkshire is left off adresses, only a post code is used, we used to be Caversham and there was also a Caversham Heights, we're now, somehow, Lower Caversham.
Yet the little amount of research that I've carried out, Caversham meant calves hame, calves were pastured in the [once] lush water meadows, and not the widely believed "place of caves", who is it that can give the go ahead to change these names.
Whoever are responsible are vandals.
Max.

| | | Re: Disappearing places I find disappearing place names really sad. They can say so much about the history and old wildlife of an area. We 'used' to have a local Cuckoo Hill, but the name has since disappeared and only a handful of locals now call it that. Eventually, the name will go for ever (and it has been physically defaced too with two ugly phone masts).
I also find irritating, when new developments are allocated street names which have no local distinctiveness. A new road near me has just been called 'Sir Isaac Newton Way'! How ridiculous! As far as I am aware, he had no ties to SE Lancs. We have plenty of historical/current local heroes who could put their name to this.

| | | Re: Disappearing places Have noticed the opposite here. Some of the small hamlets/villages have been signed over the past couple of years with their proper names. For instance a small section outside of our main town and effectively part of it has been signed on the boundaries with its old name 'Winterbrook'.
Also when we had a bypass built all the sections were named after local people, one stretch of it being named after my old history teacher.

Paul | That's good to hear. I wish they'd follow suit up here.
