| | | The North Pennines A.O.N.B The wife and I have just got back from a few days staying at Alston YH in the North Pennines.
I can highly recommend a visit here for all lovers of the outdoors. The scenery ranges from wild moorlands to charming wooded valleys and rivers and the wildlife is first class. We saw Black Grouse by the roadsides every day, wonderful close ups of a hunting Barn Owl at dusk and the best views I've ever had of Crossbills. And all these were seen without looking really, just on our walks and drives. The area is also a stronghold for Red Squirrels and we saw several at the Killhope Lead Mining Museum in upper Weardale.
It is like the Yorkshire Dales, but wilder and much quieter. A truly great place.
