What is the required criteria for posting an attachment in a post. I wished to attach a birthday greeting gif to a post recently and found no way of doing it. However, I see some people can. Please enlighten?

Hi Gandalf, to put an attachment in a post you first need to post the attachment to the forum gallery. I don't know if the forum gallery accepts gif files though. Further details can be found on how to do this via this link

Ollie Apologies, only just saw your reply. As I stated in my initial post, I wished to add a birthday greeting to a member in .gif but was unable to. Could not see any way of uploading a .gif. I know people have uploaded .gifs in the past because if you look in some of the threads you will see evidence of this. In the posting rules under my profile it says in bold: you may not post attachments That's why I asked what requirements are necessary to post attachments - some can and some can't.

no one can post attachments - the attachments folder was disabled about this time last year as it was getting too big and causing problems for site backups ( I think)

to put an image in a thread you upload the pic to the (unmoderated) forum images gallery then copy the bb code from there - see the "how to add images" FAQ at the top right corner of the Forum page

you can upload gifs , but possibly not animated ones - if you want to put animated smilies , gifs etc in you have to link them from outside but this is discouraged as we have had some problems in the past with people changing outside links at a later date to link to inapprpriate material, and also with third party sites disapearing leading to broken links
