Thumbs up 4000 Images

Hooray! We've just reached 4000 images in the gallery this morning.

As spring is just around the corner, there should be lots of opportunities coming up to take great photos while you're out and about, so I'm sure that it won't be long until we see 5000 photos.

Cheers

StuDH

P.S. The photography guides are building up nicely, so keep adding your tips and tricks and share the knowledge that enabled you to take such cracking photos in the gallery

Re: 4000 Images

I have been having a bet with myself as to which is reached first 5000 images or 1000 members. I started this when we had reached 500 members and 3000 images. Still neck and neck! 746 Members and 4000 images.

Re: 4000 Images

I'd put a bet on with you, but I've got a few thousand images on my PC that I'm going to upload when I've got a spare day or two , and with spring almost here I'll be taking many, many more over the next few months.

Re: 4000 Images

But Stu when will you ever have the time to post them?
I still reckon that with luck and plenty of members telling all interested people they meet about Wild About Britain we should just make the 1000 member mark before the 5000 images.

This has always been my plan of action. Whenever I meet people out, showing an interest in wildlife, or making photographs of anything I believe could be shared with us, I give them the websites' address. I know for a fact that 25 members have joined of the back of such a small efforts and I have initiated the activity of more members to the site. Some are active members and some contribute from time to time, but all the same they have made a valuabe contribution.

A poster at your local supermarket, a card with the websites details on it, takes no trouble at all.

The site promotes itself very well through the various articles and their search engine entries but I think the members can make an effort to help promote the site more. The site and my entries are something I am proud of and I love talking about the site to others. As I stated before, if every member introduced one more we'd have 1400+.

Food for thought...

Re: 4000 Images

Boddie, knowing how well you promote WAB I was keeping quiet about you because you're the trump card. I was hoping that if Stu had forgoten about how well you publicize the site then we could call on you to give the numers a final boost. Anyway keep up the good work I am in the unfortunate position that most of the people I see have (holds up hands in horror) either NO INTEREST IN WILDLIFE or only want to see it second hand on the tele. Poor folk whose lives must be very baren, to be missing out on the wonders around them.

Re: 4000 Images

For me anyone with a camera, photoing wildlife is fair game. Anyone out walking the hills I explain the fact that I am there through referal of one of the contributors to the site and am confident to advise them on other walks that may be of interest to them. Travelling the country means I am pretty proficient at knowing where people live and have usually at one point been in their vacinity. My new job means I now look after the West Midlands and Wales, so Wales will be fun as previous jobs have meant I only ever concentrated on the south of Wales, now I look after the whole of Wales above the M4, so having to be with the same hospital for up to 2 weeks at a time means that I stay locally and have plenty of time in the evening for walks and plenty of photography opportunities, so the Wales portfolio should come on leaps and bounds as soon as the lighter nights come in. I can't wait - bike on the back of the car, walking boots and a camera. Fantastic.

But again, a small A4 poster in Sainsbury's or the post office

Support Local Wildlife
www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk

with a nice cartoon on it, so that the kids show an interest

simple, but effective

Cool Re: 4000 Images

at the risk of being immediately cashiered from my recent elevation to Member of the Wild Empire, I wonder if some of the landscape and other galleries might be pushed a little more...I almost visualise some of you going through stunning countryside with a magnifying glass focussing a downwards aspect...or wearing out the tele-photo before ever trying a wide-angle.

I also joined World Photography Forums, originally for things that obviously were not suited for here, but am tempted to use it even for stuff that is. 1100 members since start up in December 2005 and over 2200 photos, but more encouragingly over twice as many comments as photos and average 40 views/photo. (of which at a guess 2/3 of each are probably UK)

I am resisting temptation as this site is amazingly friendly and suportive and I am conscious that the overall aim is one worthy of every bit of support one can give it.

Maybe just a tiny poke of the button when you see a poor little orphan that has never been viewed?

Re: 4000 Images

Agree 100% Chris

We all appreciate feedback on our pix - the least we can do is put some time into doing likewise for others

*Runs off to browse the galleries...

Re: 4000 Images

I only found out about the site yesterday from Helen, but out of small acorns large oak trees grow and I am sure the site will prosper. Its friendly and helpful and I have already posted several images and will bore you with many more and thats a threat, but I agree that comments to peoples images provide encouragement and the more the better. Re: 4000 Images

I'm definitely guilty of walking with my head down when I'm out and about. In fact, I usually concentrate so much on looking for one thing, like frogs or grasshoppers, that I'm sure I walk past hundreds of great trees, birds, fungi etc and never even notice them

I know what you mean about the worldphotography site, it's got some great photos. It's also being run and advertised by the guys behind birdforum.net, which has nearly 40,000 members that they can promote the site to, so they've really been able to get going with a running start.

As a charity, we're working on lots of projects on top of the website, so our resources are very stretched as it is, but we're still making great progress and growing at a manageable rate. It has always been our aim to make this a community site throughout, where anyone can help to build the forum, gallery, reference section etc. The ball's in everyone's court, and we're always on the lookout for more players

So keep posting pics, writing comments, talking in the forums, adding content in the reference section etc, and we'll just keep going from strength to strength.

Cheers

Stu

This site is different and that's what makes it good, it will grow as the word spreads.

Re: 4000 Images

Following requests for some new features in the gallery we've now added a message bar to the top of the images as a reminder that everyone can upload pics and post comments. I've also just added a 'New Images Since Your Last Visit' icon in the forum welcome bar and increased the number of image uploads to 25 at a time (hopefully this won't cause too many problems for the dialup users )

Keep sending me your ideas for improvements and we'll see if we can implement them.

Cheers

Stu
