there are a couple of programmes that might be worth a look this week
1) CLIMATE CHANGE: BRITIAN UNDER THREAT BBC1 Sunday.. One off david Attenborough

2) FAT MEN CANT HUNT BBC3 Monday..four mena nd four women try to lose weight by living as hunter-gatherers in the Africa Bush. The group must catch and kill all their own food.

Thanks for that, will definitely watch the first one. Not really interested in watching the other one, killing and a piscean vegetarian is not a good combination

Re: TV programmes that maybe of interest this week

Thanks, Kymba, will watch David Attenborough - I saw him on BBC 4 (or maybe 3) last night on another climate change prog. One that I'd seen before, but worth watching again.

The other one sounds a bit too "reality TV" for me.

Well yes you dont get much more "Reality" than hunter gatherers?
None of you would be here reading this now had it not been for them!

Also a point to note....

In the story of mans evolution....the human brain was very very small....until around the time that man invented tools to hunt with ( meat eating) then the brain trebled in size almost instantly......I rest my case!...Incisor teeth anyone?

Re: TV programmes that maybe of interest this week

The first one is a must watch for everyone, surely. The second one sounds like another exploitative potboiler - if they want to do that sort of thing, why can't they do it in their own gardens? We're talking about a desperately poor, stressed habitat and here are rich westerners going in to make things worse just for a bit of 'fun' television ...
And if they want to lose weight then why not stop eating too much?

Yes, but these are not going to be real hunter gatherers - just people from the west pretending to be for a couple of weeks for the cameras.

It's what the brain is filled with that counts, not the size of it I would have thought omega oils from fish rather than protein from meat would have bigger impact on intelligence and brain development.

Beware of false association (statistically), Dan - I would hope that any scientist, even an undergraduate, would be ashamed of that lapse of logic ...
There is an association (between skull size (strictly, we can only assume that the brain in the skull was larger, and not necessarilly more efficient) and tool production) - you propose one interpretation. Another would be, 'Humans' brains got larger therefore they invented tools to hunt.' Carry that further, '.... they invented tools ...' not necessarily to hunt with .... Other causes are possible - for instance that they started doing crosswords but how could we ever test that thesis?

Re: TV programmes that maybe of interest this week

Consider your knuckles rapped - don't quote anything from a TV programme as 'science'!
It is actually a serious problem: the best of scientists might present arguments this way and the other, stressing that their suggestion is hypothetical but it ends up as a ten second snip on the TV ... Same applies to the internet - two lines needs to be enough to explain any scientific phenomenon .... Believe nothing until you've read the original literature or, at least, a seriously qualified review!
Back at work yet?
