| | | Update On My Wildlife Centre Well i had a meeting on Friday with someone from the Council For Voluntry Services and it went really well. He came up with some great suggestions, One was to get this up and running maybe i could become a Portable Centre. This means Finding a local school to have a small base in and a regular lunchtime and after school club, But then do visits to local schools taking wildlife equiptment with me.....possiblely setting up Ant farms and Wormeries at each school and doing various things inside and outdoors in each school depending on their Facilities. So am looking at this idea just to get the Ball rolling until i can find the ideal premises.... This will also give me a way of saving more money as i will have very little over heads.... He is also arranging a meetingwith him and a lady who deals with ALL funding that is available to new Businesses and also deals with the New Extended Schools Project.. he also has suggested other Services that i could involve that i am looking into as well.. All in all he was very excited about my idea and thinks it is something that will be snapped up Locally.. I am really excited |

Sounds like a really good idea. There's lots of hands on things you could do that are portable - winter twigs for trees, plastercasts of animal prints, feathers, seed germination (then tree planting) - even tadpoles can survive a day or two in a bucket of pond water!
Please keep us updated with this, I'm excited with you!! |

| | | Re: Update On My Wildlife Centre Just a quick update
Sunday down in chatham high street they are having one of the BBC nest box building days.. So i have done a small survey and am going down to plug my plans for the centre and do a quick Survey to get some feedback....
Then today i had an E/mail which reads....
The project sounds very interesting and both myself and my colleague who actually covers the Chatham area would like to meet with you to discuss this further. The best day for us would be on Monday 5th March in the morning.
This was in responce to this E/mail sent by the gentleman i had a meeting with in january....
I met last month with Kym and we discussed her ideas around developing a Wildlife Centre, please see below. I talked about the extended schools programme to Kym and there potentially seemed to be a good fit with her project. Particularly a scaled down version perhaps on a visiting schools basis.
I suggested to Kym that she and I met with you to discuss further and the possible links to Extended Schools. Please could you let me know when you are available over the next couple of weeks and I will liaise with Kym re: meeting.
So it looks like things are starting to move again ( slow is better then not at all ) |

A small idea you might like to explore for schools is insect boxes. There are many types and designs and the children could make them(recycling too) and best of all, they are small, hope this helps you onwards,

davew | Thanks for the suggestion dave.. I have a print out of Making Insect Boxes ( Bug Hotels), bee Boxes and other things that the children will be able to make... But all the ideas you all suggest I am noting and researching.. I already have a huge Folder full to the brim of fun Activities, Information, Suggestions and identification of many things... I do between one and two hours a day researching, As i want to be well prepared when I start...Also I buy one or two related books a week..... This Web-site has really been a godsend.I have got and learnt so much from it since joining . And will be using it in my centre with the children and Volunteers |

You mentioned activities which need minimal resourcing. One thing I did successfully in schools when I was lucky enough to be a peripatetic environmental science teacher was to help the children to make their own sun dials. In the event of there not being a suitable post or tree to use as a gnomon, in one school I managed to make a passable dial by using a child as the gnomon and chalking (later painting - with permission!) marks on the playground. This was with year 3/4 children but could be adapted for any of the primary age ranges.
I also did the usual tree & hedge planting, pond digging, habitat creation etc as well as finding and identifying invertebrates, wild flowers, etc. I'm happy to share ideas if you want to PM me anytime.

| | | Re: Update On My Wildlife Centre Thanks Neil I will be Pm(ing) you in the near future, I am trying to contact several of the local schools to see how many i can get interested, trouble here is a lot of the schools have no or very little outside space, some only a small playground.
But i had a great break through the evening before last. I was giving a farm to contact ( very close by) that have a woodland that has had a preservation order slapped on it because of a couple of really old Oak trees and a rare fungi. They are unable to do anything with this area and are looking for someone to do with consevation etc to take it on.The person who told me about it is willing to put in a good word for me with the owner
he use to run a paint balling school there until this order was palced and they were told by the Council they could no longer use it.. I also have this meeting on the 5th march with the people who deal with grants and funding i can apply for.... |

I hope they remember the fun!
