WAB idea

May be creating work here, but how about we have a wildlife reports type section on the website? kind of a diary section, where people can write down where they've been and what they've seen?

What does everybody think?

there's already a diary section (see the tab at the top)
so yes it's clearly a brilliant idea

Re: WAB idea

it doesn't seem very well used, i was thinking of it being more on the main part of the site along with the other sections, such as treehouse etc

It is on the main part of the site, depending on how you prioritise it.

Its exactly the same as the forums - it'll only grow if people want it to. The site has so much opportunity for expansion but the only people that can make it happen are the members so if you want to see such sections grow add content.

I am as guilty as everyone else. So much so that when I open WAB my setings mean that I go direct to ww.wildaboutbritain.co.uk/forums. I largely ignore the rest of the site.

However I have started adding content to the reviews section now also.

And I know of another member with over 1,000 posts - not a single one in the forums, but all in the galleries.

So why not buck the trend and add content to the rest of the site and make other areas just as valuable?

Re: WAB idea

I've created a diary and will try to keep it up to date throughout the autumn and winter hopefully others will do the same and it takes off

Re: WAB idea

Top Man.

Its a shame that certain parts of the site get neglected and you have done a top job of promoting this part of the site. Nice one.

I am working on the REVIEWS section at present. Trying my best to review some of my articles. Its good fun

Re: WAB idea

Yep

I dont think its pure coincidence that I twice reported that the REVIEWS section had been spammed with multiple links for fake watches, perfumes etc. On seperate days too.

This leads me to three conclusions

a) Nobody else looks at the REVIEWS section

b) People do look but saw no reason to report the spam?

c) Maybe it was just a coincidence

On a) the statistics tend to suggest that it is visited quite alot

So are people just apathetic to this sort of activity?

Spam seems to get reported to the admin forum very quickly normally so I don't think it's apathy. I must admit I'm also guilty of only visiting the forum and galleries, over the last few days I have been visiting some other parts of the site including the reviews section. Given that I suspect many people do what we have all admitted to doing (i.e. neglecting parts of the site) I'm surprised the viewing figures are so high for the reviews section. Could these hits be high as a result of spiders (not sure if that's the correct term) which would also explain the spam? Probably not, but just a thought.

Matt

Re: WAB idea

There seems to be a steady flow of people visiting the reviews section, many of whom are unregistered, but they do seem to be genuinely looking at reviewed entries.

Re: WAB idea

I generally only visit the reviews section when I'm feeling particularly enthusiastic about one of my books or to see if anyone has reviewed one I'm thinking of buying and those two things don't happen all that often!

Presumably search engines are leading them there then?

Re: WAB idea

I am not sure. Could be just that people who visit the site are taking a good look round and visit the reviews section.

Would be good if it is through the search engines

Re: WAB idea

Up until today I like many others have been guilty of only really using the forums and gallery, but I had a quick look in the diary section and liked the idea so I have created my own diary, the first entry is about a holiday in the outer hebrides I had last week.

Re: WAB idea

I'm still finding my way around all the possibilities the site offers and trying things out as I go along. The thing is once you get stuck into forum discussions you can literally be there all day, they can be so interesting.

I always report spam when I spot it. Still in the process of exploring Reviews and other options.
