| | | Book recomendations I know there’s a book review section but there are no recommendations. I need books on Insects, Dragonflies, and Wild Flowers and Plants, any recommendations please.
Thanks

| | | Re: Book recomendations I would recommend The Wild Flower Key by Francis Rose which has recently been updated by Clare O'Reilly. It has a very easy to follow lay-out with very attractive illustrations as well as keys themselves, its a cracking ID book that I couldn't be without.

| | | Re: Book recomendations I'd also recommend Rose for a plant field guide - you can actually identify plants from it, unlike some others.
Your "insects" category is going to be the problem. There are too many, basically, and I expect you're thinking of all other invertebrates, rather than just the 6-legged variety. The best known general book is the Collins Guide to Insects by Chinery, which I think has just been updated, but it only covers a tiny proportion of the many groups in existence. There are a number of good photographic guides - if you are interested in butterflies & moths, try getting hold of the Roger Phillips large format book - I'm not sure if it is still in print, but it comes up on eBay regularly! There are also a number of other Collins guides, including one on Caterpillars. After that, you really need to decide what you want to identify - there are good books on Grasshoppers, Snails, freshwater animals, bumblebees, spiders etc.
I hope this helps! |

Agree totally with Rodosranger and catalaze on the Dragonflies and Collins Insects. I would also recommend "Britain's Butterflies" by David Tomlinson/Rob Still. ISBN 1-903657-01-6.
Great real-life photos of butterflies and larva and excellent descriptions of species, habitats, flight-times and much more. | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
