How do I start a forum thread?

Well here goes, first time on this Forum and I am totally lost already, I cannot see how to post a new topic or how I upload a picture.

I have today taken a picture of a remarkably 'pretty' duck and for interest need to know what it is.

Can somebody help? if so please let me know:

1. How I post a NEW subject.
2. How I upload a picture.

Thanks and sorry to encroach on another persons question

I find this Forum difficult (could be my age) For interest I run a forum myself (Help Group) and there are two buttons New Thread and Reply, couldn't be easier. Sorry to winge especially that I am asking for help but I wouldn't have to CRY if I could find the NEW POST link.

Thanks

Pete

If you look at the top of any of the forums, on the left hand side is a blue bar with "New Thread" You simply click on this and start a new thread.
For pictures, Click on Gallery, Click on Uploads, which is the last bit of text on the right had side of the options. Read the forum guidelines to make sure you understand what's needed for the main galleries.
Now if your image needs identifying or you don't want it to appear in the main galleries, just to appear in a forum post, click on the Image archives. There you can upload your image and it will be available immediately for inclusion in a forum post.
Once the image has uploaded, you copy the forum code, which appears in the box under the image and paste this into your thread. Job done.

Re: Duck identification help please

Hello Petlyn. This is an odd site. It has taken me ages to sort through how it works and I still get lost, then find something new. I've come to regard it as an intelligence test now - and too often I fail! Once I start to make sense of things somebody changes everything around so I have to start learning again. Like you, I tend to blame my inabilities on anno dommini.

Firstly to get a photo into the Gallery. There are 2 basic galleries; identified and labelled photos for showing and an archive gallery for images requiring identification or for use in a forum.

To use a photo in a forum. Select Gallery from the top menu line then click Upload. Read the 'how to' information on Gallery Guidelines, it sounds worse than it really is. If your image meets the requirements regarding size, format etc click the green square 'upload to archive'. Select Unidentified tab and choose unidentified birds (or other subject). Click Choose and add your photo. Enter a title, keyword and any other revelent information if required. Then click Upload. If you have done everything correctly your image will go into the Forum Gallery. If not try to work out what went wrong and try again!

To start a new question. When you select Forum, from the top line, and choose a subject, ie Birds, you will see New Thread. Click on this and type your question. Then Submit post.

To add your photo to the question before Submitting. Place the cursor where you want the photo to be. Go to Gallery, Unidentified Forum images and find your image. Right click on the bottom address line and select all, then copy. Scroll back to your question (I use the back arrows) right click and paste. A link will appear. Check with Preview to see that you have done everything correctly. You can select, and copy the photo before typing the question if you find this easier.

If this doesn't work I may have become confused and left out something important. Don't really understand why it is this complicated but apparently it is necessary for technical reasons.

If it still doesn't work try again. Like I said previously, it sounds worse than it really is and you will soon sort out any problems. Remember Submit doesn't mean 'give up'.

Re: How do I start a forum thread?

Is it also worth mentioning to look for anything with the word 'help' or 'info' (like at the top of the page, below the Forums and Gallery tabs)?

I find those very helpful - it pays to click on them and have a read (or print off for reference) before you start a thread, try uploading etc. then you'll know what to do. They're easy to read and understand too.

I know, it's difficult - after all, how many of us can honestly say we read the instructions before trying to assemble that bit of furniture !

Geoff you are a life saver, thank you. I have printed out your very clear instruction and will 'give it a go'.

I can't wait to find out what it is and where the duck originates.

Thanks again Geoff

No he didn't. I moved it to a new thread, as it had no place where he had posted it originally.
