Adding images to the Gallery

Sorry to raise this old topic yet again, I know it's been covered many times before.

Today I have come across two new posters asking how to add images to the Gallery (or to their posts). Two in a day is a little unusual, but such requests do seem to occur quite frequently. There used to be some video guides explaining how to upload images and then how to 'cut and paste' the Forum Code, but I can't seem to find them anymore.

I've looked at the FAQ in the Info section - it explains how to do the 'cut and paste' bit, but doesn't explain how to upload the images to the Gallery in the first place.

Perhaps I've missed something, but I can understand new members having problems here. It's not at all obvious what you have to do, and does need to be explained clearly in a prominent place somewhere.

Cheers,

Grumpy old Pete

Re: Adding images to the Gallery

Thanks for this Pete. I have been tearing what little hair I have left trying to upload an image but have now virtually given up. Yes how do you upload the image to the gallery?? the mind boggles.

I have a picture of a lovely duck and all I want is to upload it and try to find out what it is and where it's come from, my question is so simple yet it beggars belief as to how I upload the picture. I would have thought it would be a very simple matter of clicking on UPLOAD PIC and then search the HD and upload the picture, but oh no!!

I have had a few replies which I am grateful for but the instructions are not exactly what I am finding when I follow them.

If I was to give my email address would you be interested in seeing if you can identify it??

Pete

Re: Adding images to the Gallery

Petlyn,

Let me try to explain the procedure (as I say there used to be a helpful video showing what you do).

1. Click on 'Gallery' at the top of the page under the WildAboutBritain banner
2. Click on 'Upload', towards the top right of the page.
3. You have to choose where you want to upload the photo - if it's a good quality one it should go in the Gallery, if its a lesser quality one for identification or a forum post, it goes in the Image Archive. Click on the appropriate Upload button at the bottom of the page.
4. Select the appropriate section (default is 'member galleries', use 'Unidentified' or 'Forum Image' if uploading to Image Archive, or whatever is appropriate if uploading to the Gallery, such as 'Birds').
5. Click on the 'Browse' button. search your folders and select the photo you want to upload. (You can repeat this for a number of photos if you want to, but to keep things simple just do one at a time for now).
6. Enter a title ("usual name - scientific name" e.g. Great tit - Parus major)
7. Enter some Keywords (title without the hyphen)
8. Add some details if you like e.g. where photo was taken
9.Click on Upload/Submit
10. In the Image Archive, they appear straightaway. For the Gallery they have to be moderated for quality, so may take some hours to appear.

There are rules about the image size for photos in the Gallery (I think the details are on the FAQ, click on the 'Info' button near the top of the page).

To include a photo in a post, cut and paste the 'Forum Code' from under the photo in the gallery.

To find your photo in the galleries, I usually click on 'My photos' (in the Gallery or Image Archive, as appropriate) to see only my photos. Click on a photo to enlarge it and see the Forum Code.

Hope that helps!

Typing it all out makes it sound complicated, but it isn't really, you'll soon get the hang of it.

Re: Adding images to the Gallery

the only thing i'd add to that is that if you want to put it in the forum straight away - put it in image archive - forum images, regardless of its quality, as this gallery is unmodderated and the image will go straight in.

The main galleries are moderated and i8mages can take 24-48 hours to appear depending on how busy the mods are.
