Without going into technical detail if you have trackback switched on you can receive email notifications of updates to threads you have subscribed to etc. Another example is when uploading images to the gallery you can select the option to receive email notification if someone leaves a comment.
Trackback enables authors to keep track of who is linking, and so referring, to their articles.

Probably an easier way to get there but it works for me which is what counts.
