I assume you mean within the context of the WAB site. Without going into technical detail if you have trackback switched on you can receive email notifications of updates to threads you have subscribed to etc. Another example is when uploading images to the gallery you can select the option to receive email notification if someone leaves a comment.
Trackback enables authors to keep track of who is linking, and so referring, to their articles.

And is it something that one elects to switch on, on one's computer, Gerry, or something to be chosen in a particular circumstance?

Probably an easier way to get there but it works for me which is what counts.

I'm not sure if trackback is what I have, but what happens is that for every thread that I comment on and someone else comments after me then you receive an email informing you of this from WAB. It's a good way of keeping track but my god you do get loads of emails  |
