Sound recordings-go and have a listen!

Hi all.

Thought a few words to encourage you to visit the Sound Gallery..Jerryh has been uploading some outstanding recordings recently, they are well worth listening to..so if you've always wondered what a Nightingale or a Reed Warbler or indeed many others sounded like, go and treat yourself..

It's not about being kind Jerry, it's stating the facts! The Sound Gallery doesn't get enough usage and your work shouldn't go unnoticed. At least it won't whilst I'm around anyway!

Thanks, Jon.
I assume you drive a LR. I had a 90 CSW until the beginning of the year. Unfortunately it was an early one and was costing too much to maintain. Still miss it

ok, thanks.

Anyway, the Bittern recording you've just put up for me is the most interesting of my recordings from my weekend on the Suffolk coast, even if it isn't the best technically.

This is it:

The mic was pointed at two Bitterns, who were flying in a leisurely loop - one following the other. I didn't see the start of the flight, but it ended with them dropping into the reeds.

There are 2 sounds to listen for:
a booming - there are 6 booms of varying strength
a croaking

At the time, I was concentrating on keeping the mic pointed in the right direction. I now wish I'd been able to look through the bins as well to see if their bills were moving, but unfortunately I only have the usual complement of hands!
I reckoned I was watching a courtship flight, and speculated that this was a female croaking, followed by a male booming.

However, when I went to Minsmere a couple of days later, I discussed the sighting with a member of RSPB staff and with a bittern expert I happened to meet in the Island Mere hide.
Both assured me that there's no way that a Bittern can boom in flight, as he has to sort-of pump himself up for each boom. Also, the expert had a listen to the recording, and did not recognise the croaking as a Bittern!

So - the recording definitely has a booming Bittern on it. It seems that this must have been a 3rd bird on the ground, not one in the air - and maybe the croaking isn't a Bittern at all!

Have a listen and judge for yourself.
Jerry

Yes I have a 20yr old landy 110 which I use for work and it is superb, it has had hardly any money spent on it in the 3yrs I have had it, unlike my newer shogun which has been a money pit..............Jon

Re: Sound recordings-go and have a listen!

I can definitely hear the booming bittern, no doubt about it..as for the croaking..I've no idea if it's a Bittern or not! Very interesting though, especially after reading your explanation..
