| | | Display of meta data of archive images? Probably just being dense again.
The other day I uploaded an image (shouldn't have as it wasn't British, but hey) and added a fairly extensive description only to find the description wasn't showing with the image. So I figured I'd done something wrong and added the same descr again as a comment (as I couldn't find an "edit" option).
Now it seems to me this is "by design" somehow: If I do a search a table of search results is displayed with thumbs to the left and the dreaded description to the right. But viewing the image page the same description is nowhere to be found.
Wondering what the theory behind this might be...

| | | Re: Display of meta data of archive images? Do you mean IPTC meta data, EXIF or the upload descriptions?
The standard description info that members enter when uploading can be seen under the images, like this one by Walwyn with
"Found at Draycot Meadows Warwickshire 2 weeks ago."
As far as I know, we can't show IPTC data so it'd be useful to see where you've found some displaying with images. We can show EXIF, but it's currently taking up 650mb making backups a big job so we're looking at ways of cutting it back to the absolute minimum

| | | Re: Display of meta data of archive images? With meta data, in this case, I was talking about the descriptions and keywords etc.
Your example is from the gallery, not archive, it may make a difference.
It just got more erratic however.
Try searching the archive for "Soldier fly"
I'm not sure the link/searchid is permanent, but it may render this: http://www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk/ar...p?searchid=211
In this page I get various images with "descriptions". Clicking one of these gives me the image page, but the descriptions do not show (neither do the keywords).
But it gets worse. The image just before the last one I moved to "Unidentified Eggs, larva etc..." just now. To be clear, I'm talking about this image:
It used to have a description (I saw it in a similar search window before moving), but it has now vanished, even in the search results window. The description stated something along the lines of "I take this to be a soldier fly larva, but I'm not sure" (obviously not the title or keywords anyway).
Are other people seeing the descriptions where I don't???
Arp
P.S. I'll stop moving things for now, as I'm afraid it may be related (or maybe related to the "edit" and saving through the edit window, regardless of moving or not!). I never saw my own image in a search results window, but I have changed a typo in the title since you've made the option available and now the description doesn't show for sure (if it ever was there).

Reason: P.S. May be important

| | | Re: Display of meta data of archive images? The under image descriptions was switched off and it's on again now. Not sure what happened to the one above as I can't see the description, but there are lots more that have been moved into the new categories of the archive that are showing descriptions |

Thanks for switching the descriptions on again. Quote:

Can't test the theory however, for two reasons:
1) I tried uploading a "Test image" (twice) and the software told me it was successful (twice) but the image was nowhere to be found. First I figured I'd taken too small an image, but the second upload was 800x600 (51k) so should have been fine. Made me think of another forum thread I saw today (someone in despair)
2) So I tried, finding an image with a description from someone else and using that for a test. Found a "double" image (present twice in two different resolutions), so figured I use the lores version of that. But logic dictates more or less that now that the description field is also in the edit window it will also be saved (I'm thinking with descr. switched off it didn't get saved).
Anyway, it works now, so back to work
