Re: I'm horrified!

I don't think the WAB administrators have a say in what advertisements are placed on the site - although I do think they can ask for one to be removed if deemed offensive.

Tangentally, I read recently of real fur being sold as fake fur in some high street shops! Now I would be furious if I found out that I had been misled into purchasing that.

Re: I'm horrified!

I hate the fur trade. Just because some jumped up models and rich Hollywood morons prance around in fur coats, hey the fur trade starts up again. And to advertise on here is appalling. I'm gob smacked.

Quick, somebody get Pete (Eeyore)! - and if you don't understand why check out his recent post on the Snow Leopard thread where he tells of throwing a cup of coffee over a woman wearing a fur coat in a coffee shop - brilliant - wouldn't you just love to have been there.

Angry Re: I'm horrified!

Forgive my ignorance everyone but did the fur trade ever become illegal or just TOTALLY unacceptable.

Who are these "Hollywood stars" that have started wearing it again.

I'm stunned - is it the younger generation that never picked up the collective abhorance that developed in the 70's?

Don't suppose it will make any difference, but I have just emailed the lady in question and asked what she would charge for a jacket, made from Gabriellas skin.

Re: I'm horrified!

The site can state if it deems something is not acceptable.

Where shall we start?

Weapons of any sort
Catapults
Fur Coats, and maybe leather shoes too
Sexual materials
Lazer pens
Animal repallants
Animal traps
Any product tested on animals
Fishing equipment
Beer cans (4 packs)
Anything that could be dropped as litter
Dogs
4X4's

All adverts appear because of the topic of the page, hence if a page is dedicated to insects, you will probably get an advert for insect repellant.

Hence if you look at Coley's excellent thread on 4X4's you will see adverts for 4X4's

Each time somone clicks on the ad the site gets a small payment for providing the link, so anyone who has clicked on the link has contributed to the site and probably enticed the advertiser to keep trying to advertise on here, so it probably was not wise to provide the link in the thread???

Why 4-packs?

With regard to abusing people wearing fur coats, there are a couple of weaknesses ....
Some imitation fur looks very realistic - you could be attacking the wrong person!
What happens to someone who has inherited a fur or bought it in a charity shop? They haven't actually contributed to hunting and it would be a shame to let the thing go to waste.

Before someone suggests I'm making excuses, I am as much against hunting or farming animals for fur as anyone.... however, I wonder how many of the people opposed to furs wear leather shoes?

Why 4 packs I see you ask.

And that is precisely my point.

You see 4 packs have that plastic that holds them together, that in extreme circumstances can cause strangulation to swans, if discarded.

Where exactly do you draw the line?

I have thought of some more

Baked beans, just in case the wind blows your bin over, the can falls out, and a Fox cuts his nose on it.

My cans are washed and squashed - and the recycling wheelie bin provided by my local council is far too sturdy to fall over in the wind.

So how was I supposed to be aware of this? Has it been mentioned before - and if so, where?

Re: I'm horrified!

You weren't of course but maybe it would have been more prudent to have reported the matter than having brought attention to it publicly and providing the link.

On the plus side I now know where to buy my girlfrind the Mink she keeps banging on about, which has to be a bonus

A sentance with baked beans and wind in it and not the envitable ending I thought it would have...

seriously though google ads picks up key words and puts up advertisers adverts that selected those words. Not WABs fault. SUre they can ask google not to show that companys ads but whos going to go through and tell them not to displays the 1000s of other fur traders who have selected the 'fur' or 'Mink' or 'Fox' as a key word. Its a fruitless, endless task.

Plus as Boddies has said what else would people want blocked and where do you draw the line?

thanks Elizabeth, I've alerted Stu to this. He can block adverts which he deems to be inappropriate. If you spot any in future just PM a mod.

Re: I'm horrified!

I've put in a block, but it'll take about 4-8 hours to come into effect. We only have the ability to block 200 urls and I think we're getting close to the limit. At the moment we block adverts that are unlikely to produce an income so that there's more room for the ads that do well. Obviously, an ad from someone selling fur coats probably won't get them many sales. If people click on the fur ads the company pay for the advertising and we get some revenue, but they don't make any sales. Ultimately, they're the ones who lose out and it makes sense for them to not advertise on wildlife sites.

I agree on the whole paul - mine was a very specific set of circs (a bimble brained sloane banging on about the lovely soft fur of her new snow leo coat and how it was such a shame there werent more left in the wild - presumably so they could be brutally killed to provide her with a matching hat) , I snapped and threw my drink over her , but just to be clear this is not an action that i'm particularly proud of or one i would advocate for others. (though that said boddie if you get charlie a Mink coat you better keep her away from me when beverages are at hand )

To my mind it is never okay to wear fur for fashion purposes even if it is second hand or even fake as by doing so you imply that it is okay or even desirable to wear fur as a status symbol and thus contribute to hunting/fur farming/ poaching

as i have said before I'm with Lynx / Roar of Disaproval on this - "fur coats are worn by beautiful animals and ugly people"

Couldn't agree more. I've made the point very strongly to a number of aquaintances who used the second hand argument.

Talking Re: I'm horrified!

One of the first things I noticed when using WAB was the rather strange adverts at the top. Bird traps, rat poison etc all came up, top at the moment is pigeon control. Getting them off this site won't remove them from the world, maybe we need to know what IS being advertised rather than closing the mind to the rather odd world we live in. Did you know that pigeon netting specialists are working in London (can't be a big surprise). If you know, your mind turns to what else do they catch. Leave them on, I want to know how the commercial world sees our interests.
