| | | Moving Server 08/05/06 At midnight tonight (Monday night, Tuesday morning) I'm going to close the site down while I move it over to a new server and set it back up again. It shouldn't take more than about an hour, but it all depends on whether or not the Gremlins will be sleeping when while I do it.
Hopefully it all run smoothly and we'll be cooking on gas by tomorrow morning.

| | | Re: Moving Server Tonight I think I've just finished moving it all, and after a few problems it looks as though we're ticking along quite nicely. Let me know if you find anything that isn't working like it should be.
Thanks

| | | Re: Moving Server Tonight Given it a fair work-out and everything seems fine. Speed is amazing when altering titles of a number of images. Lets hope it doesn't slow down too much when there are more people on line.

The site certainly feels faster...I'm just hoping that it'll be a lot more reliable than the last one as well.

| | | Re: Moving Server Tonight You were certainly working the nightshift then! Everything feels faster to me, so hopefully it will remain so. Well done mate.
I'm presuming that you have a dedicated server for the site Stu. If so do you run/have the server yourself, or do you rent the space - so have to manage it remotely?
I know, I know, I'm very nosey but as my signature below says: |

| | | Re: Moving Server Tonight We're running the site on a VPS - shared hosting, but only 1 of 8 accounts on the server, and each given an equal share of disk space, CPU and memory resources - which is the same type of setup as before, but this one has a bit more juice.
We were very close to going dedicated, but thought we'd give VPS one last shot (because it costs 1/5th of a dedicated) to see if it was just the previous setup that was causing the problem. It's very early days, but all the signs are that this VPS will work well. We using hardly any of our alloted resources and it's faster.
The risk with VPS is that we can still be affected if one of the other accounts gets into trouble and causes problems on the server (like a DDoS) - in which case we'll move up to a dedicated box instead. Until then, we should now have plenty of capacity to take on a lot more traffic and so we'll start really promoting the site over the next few weeks.
Cheers

Stu | My Nan lives in Cornwall and does not have gas. Neither does half of Ireland I believe. I have suggested my Nan uses the BBQ. Do you think this will help? |
