New Gallery

We're currently moving the gallery to new and improved software. It has lots of new features and hopefully many of them will enable members to add images more easily.

We've raised the file size limit to 'massive' so you don't need to worry about resizing photos. The software will automatically reduce uploads to a maximum height or width of 1600 pixels, so it's best to reduce them before uploading to reduce upload times, but it shouldn't be a problem if you don't.

On the best features is the new thumbnails in forum posts, so pages load a lot quicker, even when they have lot of pics, like this one:

Some pics from yesterday

While we're at it, we've also decided to split everything to have a main 'Gallery' and an 'Archive'.

The Gallery

http://www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk/pictures - for the best quality images of British Wildlife and the Environment
  • All Images are moderated by the gallery editors and must meet the gallery guidelines.
  • Entries increase the member's post count
  • We store and display the EXIF data and lots of info about the images
  • All images are made available to search engines

The Archive

http://www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk/archive - for all other images; photos for the forum, unidentified images, wildlife art etc
  • Images are not moderated so they can be used immediately after being uploaded to include in forum posts
  • Images don't increase post count
  • EXIF data is not stored or displayed
  • Not all of the images can be viewed by visitors or search engines

The Old Gallery

The old gallery will still be available, so that it can server images to the posts in the forum, but if we get round to changing those posts to their equivalents in the new gallery then it'll be closed. The old gallery can be found at

http://www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk/gallery - but uploads, comments and image links have been disabled.

Re: New Gallery

Like the new thumbnails on a thread Stuart, as opposed to going cross-eyed watching the page bounce about as large pics loaded then were resized by the site software.Top Job!!

Re: New Gallery

I forgot to mention...don't know how I could have forgotten this because it's going to the nightmare of the next few days...you might have another member's photos.

We can fix it, but it has to be done manually replacing current images with proper ones and so will take some time to sort out.

Let me know if you find any that aren't right - post the link to the image on the new gallery and also a link to proper photo on the old gallery. We'll move the posts off this thread, but we'll store them to sort them out.

Thanks

Stu

Same here I have acquired a Wren that's not mine but it's all looking good and a big improvement, (not the Wren though it is good) the new gallery. Have reported it using the image report facility so it should find it's way back to it's rightful owner eventually.

Top job Stu and well worth all the hassle I bet it's given you

Re: New Gallery

Top job! The new gallery looks very smart indeed. Like others have said, I really appreciate the efforts that Stu, the mods and the gallery editors put into this - thanks everyone!

I've picked up one or two of other people's pics as well - I'll post the relevant links seperately in a little while...

Wow, fantastic job guys, your hard work is very much appreciated How do we access exif data on our pics ? Not that I'm overly knowledgable, just interested.

Hi Mike, if you go to the new gallery page and scroll down to the bottom there is a section headed "More Photos". The Wildlife art section is the third item in there.

Re: New Gallery

It is probably me but when I go to 'My Favourites' there seems to be nothing there, and lots of my snaps seem to have disappeared from the gallery. I posted several last week as forum images having previously added them to my favourites to facilititate including pics in posts. (See under 'British Birds - Another tale of the riverbank'. I cannot find them.

Re: New Gallery

Well I have just taken a look and it is lovely well done Stu.I was a bit concerned at first I couldnt see the drop down list to see the most recent where you could choose how many days but then I found how to do it.I the went to my own gallery and thought I had lost my last uploads, but on scrolling to the bottom of the page found out you can sort them how you want to view them Phew. Now all sorted. What a great job.If you cant see what you are looking for peeps just keep seeking and you will find
The thumbnails make it so much neater I like it

'My favourites' will only be images that you select from the gallery as favourites from now on. All your other images will probably be over in the archive (that's where we now put all the forum, unidientified images etc)

Re: New Gallery

Thanks Stuart. As ever, if I had read the small print properly, I would have had no problem. It's age and inherent stupidity on my part.

Thanks for your trouble.
