Adverts

As the demands on the website continue to rise exponentially, we've reluctantly had to start adding some adverts to the site this morning as a way of raising money for better resources.

As always, all revenue from the adverts will go directly to the Wild About Britain charity and hopefully enable us to invest in better software and hardware, and pay for some of the projects that we're currently working on. First priority will be a managed dedicated server that will hopefully deliver better reliability and connection speeds

We're also looking at getting some external funding from other sources that will hopefully enable us to remove the adverts in the future, but until then the ads should hopefully be a good way of paying the bills.

Cheers

Stu

Re: Adverts

They seem pretty harmless to me, my other favourite forum uses links through to amazon advertizing useful books that seems pretty harmless too and sometimes it even leads me to good books I otherwise wouldn't have found. The forum gets money for the advert and more still I think if a book is bought after moving through the link.

Re: Adverts

Sorry if this has been mentioned elsewhere and i haven't seen it but is there currently anywhere or anyway the membership can contribute ie do we have a paypal address or similar where we could donate if we wanted to.

IIRC Bird Forum allows you to contribute and you get BF Supporter put into your posts.

Not saying we need that but just a thought.

Re: Adverts

I've nothing against adverts, as long as they're not spread right across the page, and no pop-ups please! I think if possible, it would be good to keep to wildlife related products/sites as this is in keeping with WAB.

Also there's a donation link at the bottom of the home page.

Re: Adverts

The ads are fine with me. Any little income helps I guess. Sure would be good to improve the server and not have the problems you had earlier this year. Then hopefully you can trust to get a weekend off.

I agree (as long as they don't become too obtrusive e.g. pop ups). If the resultant income allows an improvement in speed and reliability it can only be worthwhile (speaking of which, it's just taken around 30 seconds to open this reply box).

Matt

Hi Mark,

We're currently putting together some online donation facilities on this page and would really welcome any donations to the development of the charity.

Cheers

Stuart

Re: Adverts

Definitely no plans to include pop-up adverts on the site

The current adverts are produced automatically, based on the content of the pages, but I think we're able to filter out some of the content - so we'll try and get rid of the 'pest control' ads in the insect sections

Cheers

Stuart

Re: Adverts

I am by nature an ad hater, but agree that one gets so much from the information sector of the internet, and this site is one of the highlights, a few innocuous ads like this are acceptable. Just please don't go on to animated blocks

Re: Adverts

I'm not sure about the Nixalite bird control advert at the bottom of some pages is suitable. Not for a wildlife site anyway! Maybe it didn't get filtered out.

Re: Adverts

Google is pretty clever at matching the ads to the content, but it obviously gets it wrong on a few occasions so we have to remove these ads manually by adding their URL to a blocking list. I've just added nixalite and it should be blocked within 4-8 hours.

Let me know if you find any more.

Stu
