Age indicator

Hello. I was wondering if their could be an age indicator by the members name. I don't mean for all members, just the younger ones. Say the age of 16and under.
Even though this a great friendly site, some of the posts can be a bit abrupt.
And if it is in response to a younger member, it could put them off.

Just a thought!!

Re: Age indicator

There is a younger members area. Few would want to admit that they
were young as their opinions are usually very mature (plus ageism is against the law) also we would not want younger members targetting by the unscrouplous

Re: Age indicator

True, and i realised the unscroupulous part as soon as posted.

I brought it up, because my daughter won't use site any more. She had an abrupt reply once-through my user name, and it put her off. I have been trying to get her back on. Though the reply looked trivia to me, to her it wasn't.

Thanks for reply.

Re: Age indicator

I am sorry that your daughter has had an unpleasant experience here on the site I hope that she will realise that although the huge majority of users are
very friendly,as in the real world some (although friendly) are given to shortness it is a fact that is unavoidable we are all different and as she was using your sign in as well......
Please ask her for me if she would sign on in her own right and give us another try

Re: Age indicator

As you say she was logged on as you, C C, and as you say, to you the reply wasn't to bad. PHaving an age indicator wouldn't have made a difference in this case because of the log on issue.
I agree with nightshade, explain to your daughter that the reply would have been written in responce to you, and not her. If she has an interest in wildlife ask her to join as herself. We'll do our best to make her welcome.

Re: Age indicator

Yes, this is a tricky one as you don't really know, unless specified, the age of anyone on here.
I've got 2 children who use the site and they both have there own usernames so I can check and make sure all is well.
I can only agree with the above that your daughter registers herself and picks a nice, friendly type username ( a bit like my own really…….well maybe not ) that way at least she'll start off on the right foot.
I don't know about you but I do form a mental picture of people from their username until I read a few of their posts and see what type of person they are and phrase my answer accordingly. (If I can think of anything to say that is.)
Anyway hope she joins and enjoys herself on here!
Suzanne

i would imagine that if she or you tell admin (stu DH) her email , then he will be able to track down her username etc so she wouldnt have to register twice.

Why can't we have "wig" icons like dark, blond, grey, and bald?

Re: Age indicator

I dont mind if every one knows how young and handsome i am lol. On most forums i go on you can see the folks age in their profile, may be thats an idea? Im also one for using real names or having your real name in your signiture, Im Jon-paul or JP or ......... sorry cant repeat it on here But I understand you completely forums are a breeding ground for google experts and book page flicker answer'ers but it takes all sorts of folk to make a forum community and theres always the grumpy short answering ones too, I think if a youngster joined and introduced them selves "Hi Im Paris Chardoney (im from essex ok) hi i love nature etc etc and im 14" all the regulars would keep an eye out for them , ive only been here a while and i can see what a lovely giving bunch you all are (by the way its my birthday sunday PM me for my address i accept postal orders lol )
Id like to see younger members on here they are the future caretakers of our planet after all and us young fogeys should be educating our younger members in the ways of a naturalist, how about getting your daughter to join in her own name and saying Hi ?

Oh dear, I do so hope it wasn't me. My posts are a bit wooden I know. If it was, I would like to apologise very sincerely.
I would state my age as an excuse .. but there really is no excuse for thoughtless choice of words is there?

I'm in total agreement. We have enough to worry about walking around our society with regards to looks, weight, age, sexuality etc, here it's great to just love wildlife and enjoy the company of like-minded friends. Liberating

Thanks, i did'nt think of that.
Though, i think he will have some fun. There has been several registrations from my email, and another i use, a bit of an open house. One of which was an earlier user name, that i did not like. My Daughters? and probably a few others.

Sorry Snowdrop, did'nt notice your post

No need to worry it was'nt you

Like i said, it was Trivia. I think i can be a bit wooden, i don't mean to be. Thats why i keep most of my replies short and sweet. I lack the gift of the gab. If you know what i mean.

Re: Age indicator

I think a good way to determine the age of troublesome members would be to saw off their head and count the rings.

only kidding, maybe

Re: Age indicator

It just proves the point to be polite and respectful in posts, Im not a youngster but some replies (not WAB I might add) have the effect of making the enquirer feel stupid or foolish. I certainly wouldn't want to spoken to in a demeaning way.

I try my utmost to be friendly and respectful in my posts
