| | | Huge adverts Is it just me, or is everyone experiencing huge Google adverts on this site now? I know they've always been there, but they were small & unobtrusive before - now they seem to take up most of the screen!

I thought James had done something weird (he's just been doing some homework) and I asked him to refresh WAB and BAM! There's a HUGE Beach Image now

| | | Re: Huge adverts Yesd, very disconcerting for most of the page to disappear under a useless advert and for it to take two clicks to get back to the previous scheme .... where would we be without Stu? ... on the other hand, who created the problem in the first place? Good to be back to normal ... if there' anything such as 'normal' here .....

| | | Re: Huge adverts Just a bit of tinkering. The big ads are now only visible to unregistered visitors (so obviously they'll also show if you're not logged in). Not exactly friendly, but I'll give them 48 hours at least to see if they significantly change the amount of ad revenue we get |

Just a thought, but if I'm faced with big adds on a website I've just found I usually don't make it past them as I hate them 'in my face' like that |

| | | Re: Huge adverts Yes they are putting me off as well!
I often drop in not logged in for a look around and then log in if I want to post.
Also if I visit a site and see loads of ads (here on my widecreen laptop the google ads part is filling most of the screen so I have to scroll to even start to see the forum topics) I would normally navigate away from the site as as a visitor to a site I don't want to be presented with loads of ads, I want content.
I understand needing the revenue but with this amount of space on a landing page it may put off new people from staying on the site as initially on a quick glance it could look more ad content than real content.

| I also discovered this problem yesterday when I was on the laptop and found it hard to concentrate. I have to log in now just to get away from it , the good news is at least we are members and have the option . |

| | | Re: Huge adverts After spending a lot of time designing the site to look the way we want it, we don't like them spoiling the look and usability either, but the revenue is way too much for us to switch them off at the moment. Servers, software, developers and all the other costs are rising fast and we need to pay the bills, as well as paying to significantly grow the website and develop the charity offsite.
To avoid the big ads, visitors just need to register and log in. We're getting over 6,000 unique visitors a day at the moment. The bounce rate (the number of visitors who leave with just 1 page view) has only gone up 1.8% since the new ads were put in - and lots of them are exiting through the adverts, so overall they're definitely a benefit.
Stu
P.S. I've set up my account so that I still have to look at them, even when I'm logged in. It should then help me to work how long it takes before they drive me nuts...lookarly theeere ahving know affekked at teh moomeunt |
