Hi John. I don't think movies have been catered for, probably because of bandwidth issues. Whether it could be, I'll ask the powers above..

Re: Let's Have some Sounds!

We've recently got Flash 8 Pro, which has a great video compression facility, so it should now be possible to include video. It can produce very high quality with small file sizes, but it will still take some time to process each vid and so I think we'll need to implement some guidelines on the type and quality of video we receive.

Essentially, the guidelines would need to include tips on creating and editing the video and then supplying it in the correct format for us to compress.

If anyone would like to help out writing a video guide then let me know and I'll send you some more info.

Cheers

Stu

Is there a market for movies of fungi?

Then again, what about time-lapse stuff

Does anyone know what tonight's thriller is?

Paint dry the movie has been on that many times.

Re: Adding Video to the Gallery

Short wildlife movies can be done in AVI format just as easily as sound is done in MPŁ.
But I can see you would rather watch paint dry

Re: Adding Video to the Gallery

Well I have a few 35 second Quick Time movies taken through my Nikon CP4500. The trouble is they are around 5mb in size.

They are of birds of course but I have movies of such birds as the Lesserpecker, Bairds Sandpiper, Temminks Stint, and some poor footage of the Sociable Plover, plus a few others.

Is there any way I could get the file size down without losing the quality of the footage. If so I wonder if they could go into the gallery.

I suppose I could put them onto a disc and post them to whoever could place them into the gallery.

What do you folks think?

John

This can be reduced to just under a mgb in Windows Movimaker
providing it takes your format.(AVI)
Import you video and place it in the storyboard. Go to the top pudown file menue and click on save movie
Then click next and it will ask you where you want to put it . I would put descktop (ths saves a hunt after) then click next and it should say save movie (at this point don't worry about the title leave it as Movie)
Under that should be a very tiney message saying 'Show more 'if not click next and it will show there on the next page. Any how when you see the message 'Show more' click on it and an info box will appear, ckick the arrow and a drop down menue will show.
Move down the menue until you see 'High quality small movie' this will reduce your movi and will keep it's quality. It wont be full screen though but it will be less than a mbg. Try this out.

Re: Adding Video to the Gallery

Don't you think it would be better to sort out the server space, gallery issues, before we start thinking about larger file sized movies?

Hi John,

We'd compress them with Flash, but we'd need them to be supplied as raw AVI or a virtually lossless compression first. I'll post some more info when I've worked out the best way of doing it.

Hi Alan,

The server space is now sorted and I don't think that there are any issues with the gallery that would affect the display of videos. We've got a compression tool that can significantly reduce videos to quite small file sizes, so that shouldn't be too much of a problem either...but there's only one way to find out

Hi Stu

Thanks for that. What about if I were to save them all on a disc and post it to you. Would that help. That way when you know what to do to them to get them acceptable then you can let me know how to do it and I might be able to do it my end.

John

Hi Beryl

First of all what is Windows Movimaker. I don't recall having anything like that on my PC. I don't know what storyboard is so there is nothing that I can think of where I can use your instructions.

Re: Adding Video to the Gallery

It would probably be best to send camcorder captures on a CD/DVD, but the smaller files (less than 20mb) would be a fairly painless upload on broadband. I could then download, compress and upload them again.

I'll send you some more info by PM

Hi John.

Windows Moviemaker comes as part of Windows XP Home Edition. Not sure if it comes with other versions.

I'm not sure if I can attach my sort of movie file but I will give it a try when I get home. If I can't, and I can't seem to find a way to save it as an acceptable extension, do you want me to put them onto a CD and post them to you?
