| | | So Frustrating!!!! I've just joined today and have sucessfully added 2 pics to a forum thread (crayfish). However when trying to load a bird pic of mine it came back too big, too small, too small, too big! argh!!!!!!
Having realised that the pics were taken on different cameras I can see the problem I've got. But without spending hours on 'paint' trying to reduce the pictures by increments of a percentage until I hit the right dimensions (800 x600) is there a quicker way? I've been tussling with this one bird pic for nearly an hour now!!!!!
I don't have any photo editing devices other than 'paint' to change the size of my pics and it doesn't tell me (until I've done it) what the dimensions actually are - so frustrating!
It seems my pics are 3072x2304 and seeing as I'm no mathematician what percentage to I need to reduce them by to get the golden 800x600?
Help please |

| | | Re: So Frustrating!!!! Hi Cassie,
Firstly welcome to WAB.
Try this - open desired image in Paint
Click on image at top of the window
Then click on Attributes
In the box that appears delete the numbers that are in the two boxes
Type 800 in the width box & 600 in the height
Now click OK
Go to "file" at top of window and click save
Hopefully that should sort it out for you, you can of course put in whatever dimensions you like in the boxes.
Good luck.

OK another silly question - If I do this and haven't had my pictures actually 'printed' yet will this reduce the size of them for processing? I need to get over 100 together so it's cheaper at Boots lol! |

What I tend to do is make a copy of the image to resize for WAB
"Make a new folder titled WAB images"
Open "my pictures" then open the folder you need
Click on the desired images to highglight them
Then use the "copy selected images" command on the lefthand menu on the window
Simply browse and click on the new "WAB images" folder as the destination. |

Anyway, thanks for you help Steve I appreciate it
Ooops! Erm... I've now got 5 piccies of the same bird up in the gallery (whinchat) - sorry! How do I delete 4 of them. I'm still confused as I got a message saying they were the wrong size and didn't upload, but they obviously did?!? |

Stick with it, I know it seems a bit confusing at first but you'll soon get the hang of it, if you have any problems or questions dont be affraid to give me or one of the other moderators a shout via PM.

I just spent most of the afternoon resizing 4 or 5 pictures after getting the too big/too small messages (and did it by guesswork so probably still wrong). I eventually got them to load, or so I thought, but... there is nothing there!
Ah well, back to the drawing board.
Thanks for the expalanation about resizing in paint. That will make life easier.

| | | Re: So Frustrating!!!! cazzie - there's a lot of free software about that will be a LOT better for you than Paint - and will let you resize to whatever exact size you require.
I'd recommend Irfanview... IrfanView - Official Homepage - one of the most popular viewers worldwide
or Google's own Picasa... Picasa

Can I just confirm something?!? When I'm posting in the Forum or Unidentified sections then the pics have to be 800x600 max right? But any others can be as big as I want? Is that right? I promise I'm not being dippy (as Jillw may also back me up) but the instructions are not that clear tbh.
Btw, there's still 3 of my bird pic's up in the gallery Steve lol! |

Btw, there's still 3 of my bird pic's up in the gallery Steve lol! | It's the other way around. Forum, Unidentified and Critiques are not moderated and therefore you can upload any size you want. Gallery piccies are moderated and need to be a minimum of 800x600 making sure that the width is at least 800 although the length can be larger than 600. That way portrait images can be catered for. Also remember that the file size should not exceed 500kb. again if you restrict your images to 250kb. you are erring on the correct side.

Cazzie, I thought it was the other way about? That the gallery is to be 800 x 600 and the forum and unidentified wer not as restricted? Hang on... your's loaded and mine didn't, I'm going to go do what you did |

OK, now I'm totally confuzzled!
I tried to load a bird piccy of a whinchat that was originally 3072x2304 into the unidentified gallery, but it wouldn't let me, said it was too big, then after I modified it, it was too small, then too big and so on, so I gave up. Only to find that infact all 5 had loaded when I later looked on the gallery and I felt very silly!
So, does that mean if I'm loading my pics which are all 3072x2304 atm, into any other gallery other than the forum/unidentified ones, then they'll go straight in?
Sorry I'm being a pain, but I'm trying to get the hang of this!!!! |

no - for the forum and un id galleries they can be any size within reason (it is still better to make them smaller tho as they will upload faster.)
for all other galleries they need to be 800pix wide and at least 600 pix tall
and have a file size of under 500kb (you may find that to get the file under 500kb you have to change the ppi to 72ppi)
also apart from the forum and unid'd the others galleries are moderated so even succesful uploads wont go straight in - they go into a queue for moderating which can take 24-48 hours depending on how busy the edds and mods are
dont worry about asking questions we were all new once , and the only silly question is the one you dont ask
also check out the video guides for a step by step of what to do

What's a ppi btw? - now I'm even more confused!
Well I did check out the video guides (why call it that when they're not vids anyway? It's no wonder I couldn't find the links to upload normal piccies!) however, I sorta got the gist...eventually
Ahhh...! so my pics are being scrutinized eh! ok I'll hafta wait till I get the go-ahead then
I'm worn out now and will have to go to bed soon.... thanks for all your help and advise so far everyone, it's much appreciated
See ya tomorrow! |

| | | Re: So Frustrating!!!! Cazzie are you concentrating too much on the piccy size instead of both that and the file size. As I stated in a previous post all files must be under 500kb. although the optimum is 250kb. That combined with piccy size of a minimum of 800px wide by at least 600px high you should not have trouble getting your images into the unidentified or forum gallerys. Remember that moderated images are also judged on quality and also as Eeyore states will take time to go through the system depending how busy the mods/editors are.

| | | Re: So Frustrating!!!! Cazzie, ppi is pixels per inch. If your camera is set to take images at 300ppi then usually the file size will be too big for WAB. If you use Irfanview or Picasa you should be able to save at 72ppi which seems a perfect answer to images shown on the screen although you will want 300ppi probably if you intend to print. I find it best to save the original at 300ppi and a copy at 72ppi for uploading to WAB.

| | | Re: So Frustrating!!!! Just to point out that the system has been a little weird today, hence some of the contradictory messages. Quite a few users have double or even treble posted images because they didn't appear immediately. It's always better to wait a while before you upload any image again to allow the system to catch up. |

| | | Re: So Frustrating!!!! Well I haven't tried loading any new ones yet as the whole process seems very time consuming to me - no offence like
Another question for you... Most of mile file sizes are 1.00 - 3.50MB not KB, does that mean they're really HUGE then?
I've got a Panasonic DMC-FZ8 btw, and it's 7 megapixles, if that helps. However if I'm on full zoom (x48) the image goes down to 3 megapixles.
So is there any way of using paint to reduce the file size or do I really have to upload one of these photo softwear thingy's?
Sorry for being a pain. I'd like to keep my questions on here rather than PM if you don't mind as there maybe other newbies like me who will gleen some info from this thread too
Sorry forgot, but if I load a piccy into the gallery and then want to use it on the forum for instance, do I have to reaload it direct from my PC into the forum section or can I import it from the gallery direct?
Bet you love me, don't you?!? |
