Latin names in gallery images

I am sorry but I have just read a comment about one of my photos and I am now very confused.I am no nature watcher and half the time I havent a clue about birds names common or otherwise.I have a small book which helps but even then I still have problems identifying them.I just love to go out and take pictures and to have somewhere to show them and this site is ideal as it is so friendly and people are so nice with there comments and help.I am strictly amateur in photography and wildlife. Therefore I was i little upset at this comment

"Can you please place the latin name at the side of the species name in both the title and keyword section in the future. I have changed this one so you can see what I mean.

If you have a field guide the latin name should be given with the bird."

I understood I could put what I knew about whatever I had taken and the editors would help with the rest.Am I wrong?

Re: sorry

Hi Cherrybee, don't worry about it, there's no need to apologise. You're right, common name, latin name, or nothing at all, it's all OK with us - just add whatever you can and we'll fill in the rest.

I'll let John know about it.

Thanks

Stu

Re: sorry

I have found the editors to be fantastic but I guess their workload is growing. I dont always know the names and they help out with the identification. I guess they are saying that if you know the details then to put them in the correct fields? Got to admit I am guilty too but do realise their efforts.

I think you are right but did you include the latin name?

Cheers

Re: sorry

How about one of the 'site helpers' posting a link to an online resource, maybe Stuart could place the link, with a brief explanation, on the gallery upload template?

That would be a brilliant help I usually search google but you get so many links it is hard to find what you need

Re: sorry

Can I as a Gallery editor come in here. If you don't know the name then leave it blank. If you put in a lot of other things instead of the name then we only have to spend time deleting it. We do not expect that everybody will know what they have photographed and that is fine, I often don't myself. Those that do know, if they can then use the format Stuart showed ie Common Name - Latin name , with the capitals as shown then we would appreciate it. If you only know either the common or the latin name then that is fine as well. Just put that in.

Lastly to Cherrybee and anybody else who feels anxious about names, we are here to help. I don't even hold a shotgun licence and in any case I don't know where you live. Relax and enjoy your wildlife and photography. If you also learn something then that will be a bonus ( I don't know what Stuart charges for bonuses)

Re: sorry

Like Wildone says we will sort it out.

If you want to try and enter the details yourself and you know the name of the bird type it in to google and that will more than likely link you to the RSPB or Birds of Britain web sites.

Re: sorry

Cherrybee, if you know that you have taken that particular bird, flower or whateverbefore, then open an image of yours ( doesn't matter if not same subject) and click on (View all of cherrybee's images). That will show you all the pictures you have posted and will have all the common and latin names in, and show you how to enter them. Where the capitals go and what goes in which box.

Hi
I find it hard to remember my name at times. If you can find the common name than the two following links will help with the Latin name. I find the first link the best one (part of the R.S.P.B site) , you will also find bird songs and alarm calls on the links.

Re: sorry

But cherrybee takes flower, tree and other subjects apart from birds. I think a lot of different wildlife URLs could become very confusing and difficult to manage.

Re: sorry

Give me 1/2 an hour and I'll pull our list from the reference section with common name and latin names for almost all birds, mammals etc

Why didn't I think of this earlier?

Re: sorry

Stuart, sorry to put a lorry load of work onto your shoulders, but wonder if a gallery to help id and name common species would help. Using one photo from the 000s on offer to show a distinguishing feature, with common/latin names, maybe even some info regarding habitat etc?

Am I running before I can walk

Hi Carl

I think we need to be careful here of adding 000's of sections in the gallery and forum, which will then have run the risk of things becoming all a little confusing.

Cheers

Re: sorry

OK, I've changed the title of this thread, to make it easier for members who do a search about latin names in gallery images.
