| | | Re: sorry carlj, I've added a couple of new columns to the page for thumbnails of birds to make the ID easier. If anyone wants to go into the gallery - wink, wink, nudge, nudge - and grab a load of good thumbnail images (right click and save as) then send them to me, via email@... I'll add them to the page.
As the thumbnails are only small, the pics need to be clear and quite easy to identify the species. Some species will be too difficult to ID from the thumbnails and there won't be any juveniles etc, but it's a start
For more info on each species, just click on the common name link |

| | | Re: Latin names in gallery images Well it seems I started a hornets nest with my comments to Cherrybee's photo. I must admit that when I re-read my comment I realised that it didn't read the way it was meant to. I have apologised for that.
Regarding birds I am more than happy to ID anything I can and I suspect there are one or two others in the Forum more than capable of working their way through Bird ID's
Apart from a few Moths and Butterflies everything will be outside of my scope but within other members.
I would just say post away but it would help those that take photos to try and get to know their subject. There is nothing more satisfying than seeing a bird, not knowing what it is then working it out.
Having said that if you do know the common name of a bird a quick search in Google usually gets you the latin name also. I suspect all species of wildlife and vegitation works in similar ways.

| | | Re: Latin names in gallery images Not so easy with Vegetative subjects as many species can have lots of sub-species. Insects also are most difficult to know theur common names, often needing disection to obtain a definitive identification. Few birds in this country have many subspecies, if any.

| | | Re: Latin names in gallery images well a very useful hornets nest John I am sure your help to me will be invaluable when searching for ID's especially as I have printed off the list.I have sent emails to my friend that when re-read looked wrong so you are not the only 1 |

| | | Re: sorry Why are you sorry? Judging by the content in this thread, I suspect most people use the word "Latin" when doing a search rather than scientific. Either way, it is still more useful that the original thread title, so I'm not too concerned about the absolute "correct term".
Cheers.

Warblers, especially the Chiffchaff. Pied Wagtail, Great grey Shrikes. Rock Pipits, Stonechats and even our Long tailed Tits have sub species. Then there are the Gulls & Geese.
You would be surprised at just how many birds do have sub species when you really get into it.
