| | | Anyone monitoring Elvers? Hi folks,
Is anyone here monitoring elvers to any degree? Have you introduced an artificial weir to a water course to facilitate this? Would love to here any comments.
Cheers,
Adam |

| | | Re: Anyone monitoring Elvers? Have you PMed John, aka Woodman? I remember talking to him (I think!) about elvers being overharvested somewhere at a narrow weir so he might know about it or someone who does. Might be worth a PM |

Yes Adam, I'm currently working on three elver passes and have experience with many more over the last few years. Currently involved with constructing site specific monitoring equipment and timetable for this years spring tides.
If you'd care to PM me with specifics I'll do what I can to assist. An email a/d would see some info on its way to you.
Regards

| | | Re: Anyone monitoring Elvers? I guess you guys would know (no, I didn't mean you, Za - yours is another department altogether !), but I came across these abandoned on a stream/river bank today and wondered if they are old eel traps.
I saw - a few years ago - crayfish further upstream in the same stretch of water. I'd say they were 2 - 3 feet long
Thankyou

C | I think you're spot on with that, Lemars. They have many vernacular names , fyke nets are more efficient and have generally taken over the use of these devices or engines as they are sometimes termed in legislation. Coincidently I watched a short bit of a programme tonight where a group of Severn fishermen were weaving willow putchers which are used in tidal waters to catch salmon and sea trout. They use the same catching principal to woven eel traps.
Interesting find, you do come across some good stuff en France! |
