The influence being the previous winter, so occassionally (with our climate) they can get caught out) |

| | | Re: Ice on Ponds I usually leave my pump running, and overfill the pond as soon as a really cold spell is forecast. This high layer freezes, then I drain a couple of inches of water to leave an airgap, so far it seems to work well but whether this is coincidental or science I don't really know.

| | | Re: Ice on Ponds I'm glad there's been such a positive response to this thread - it looks like we should get a really good range of ice accounts from different parts of the country and various pond types. If we get any frosty weather that it - autumn just seems to be going on and on at the moment. |

| | | Re: Ice on Ponds We had frost on our car a week or two ago but no more since. I just remember last year this time it was snowing hard.

| | | Re: Ice on Ponds First ice.
The pond is about 3m x 1m. Gradually sloping from a stoney 'beach' to 60cm at it's deepest. Semi-rural location on south yorkshire/notts border. 2mm of ice covering the entire pond. No pump but I've been out (in attractive dressing-gown and pink crocs) with a pan of hot water and melted a hole at shallow end for birds and one at the deep end. I cleared out most of the leaves from the pond last week but haven't cut back the leaves on the water lily yet.

| | | Re: Ice on Ponds Thin ice just around the edges, pump running, water running down the stream much appreciated by the birds. Chickens miffed I have been out three times to de-ice their water.
