Please can anyone identify this bird.

Hi, new member to these Forums and really looking forward to participating.
I would like to answer a question about a bird that was in one of the wet docks in Liverpool. Now I don't know an awful lot about bird identification but I get a lot of pleasure observing them. I can't give you a lot of info. I am afraid, other than when it was standing on a plank in the water, it looked to me about 8-10 inches high, completely black and a white line, which was quite long, above or below the eyes (I couldn't make out it's eyes from where I was standing). After watching it for quite a while, it stepped into the water and swam away.

Possibly a Coot?

Deb London, now that was quick. I have googled Coot but this bird didn't have a
white chin, neck and breast, it was completely black with just the white line which was diagonal, over or below the eyes.

My apologies Deb London, I have just googled it again and you are correct, it definitely was the bird I saw (seen???)
